For those without an Apple TV but have an iPad with USB-C and want to experience Fitness+ on a big screen TV, does Apple "allow you" to mirror the display to a TV via HDMI? Is there some kind of HDCP protection that prevents this, presumably to force people to purchase Apple TVs?

It works! I connected a USB-C to HDMI cable from my iPad Pro to TV and started a workout just fine. The video wasn’t full screen for some reason on my TV, but your experience might be different.

That's fantastic! Thank you for trying this out. I'm sure there's variations in TV screen size, resolution, aspect ratio, HDMI cable, etc that result in some quirks, but as long as this works in some form, I'm ready to give Fitness+ a try!

Backstory: I sold my Apple TV 4K a while ago thinking we'd have an upgraded model by now this year. Here's to 2021!

It wasn't full screen because they're probably just mirroring the display (haven't been able to test myself yet), and iPads all have non-16:9 resolutions. An app that was properly thought out will only display the video on the TV at the correction resolution.

The iPad Fitness app seems a bit shoddy in general. iPhone and TV versions will show which workouts you've completed, while the iPad doesn't seem to know that information at all.

That’s correct. It’s odd, because the workout preview and basically all other videos display in full screen. Something about the actual workout routine is coded differently.

Interesting. Do workouts done on the iPad show up on iPhone and TV though?

Just checked and they do, thankfully. iPad app doesn't show checkmark for completion, or say completed in the description either. I'm sure Apple will fix this by the time the workout library grows big enough where this would be bothersome

edit: completed workouts showing up in iPad app now
