Five Icon Dock and 3G conflict

When I have 5 icons in my dock (JB 16GB iPhone 3G), I seem to lose cellular data connectivity (I'm on Orange in the UK) - that is, my phone still shows the Orange 3G icons, but nothing connects. On Wi-fi, everything works correctly.

When I take off that 5th icon, the phone restarts (or does a series of kind of small freezes before being ready) and then 3G/Edge connectivity returns.

I just noticed this last night: anyone have any idea what's going on here? Anything I should try so that I can get that useful 5th icon back on my dock?

Reboot your phone and see if that helps (hold power and home button till you see the apple logo) or reset the network under your settings. See if that helps.
