Hi Guys,

Im in a dilemma. Need your wonderful advice.
I have a 2013 macbook pro, with 773 cycle count and my smart roommate decided to clean my screen while i was away with lysol and destroyed the screen. Apple said screen assembly + new battery would run me around 800 USD. (500ish for screen 200 for battery and tax)

I wanted to try the 2017 15" macbook pro so I purchased the model with 3.1 Ghz i7 , 16gb memory, 512gb SSD .....

I don't love the new keyboard....I don't hate it...it can "deal" with it. Touch bar was part of the deal so its okay not necessary....BUT the battery life....oh the battery life....normal day is 7-8 hours on 2017 model....my current macbook gets 6:30 hrs with OS X el captain on it...used to get over 10 hours in the beginning. (high sierra is awful and sluggish on my 2013)...

I rarely had a problem with my 2013 macbook pro...I use it for watching videos...no heavy video processing or anything...

=======
My question is: Is it a smart idea to spend 800 on 2013 macbook pro to fix it and continue with it ....
Or should i accept the depreciation of battery life to continue with each OS X release and keep the new macbook ....

Again i do notice new macbook is speedier but my 2013 macbook pro was RETINA model and the only thing the 2017 has is bigger screen, a bit more resolution and a bit more brightness....

Should i return the 2017 15 inch macbook pro and fix the 2013?

What do you guys think in your opinion?

Thanks

Here's how I see it, it seems you don't really need the performance and the fun stuff that comes with the 2017 so let's just compare your options from an economical point of view.

Let's assume you keep your MBP for about 7 years. So if you repair your 2013 you could keep it for another 2 years and if you purchase the 2017 you could keep it for the full 7 years.

800$/2 = 400$ per year.

You really went all in on the specs of the 2017! 4000$/7 = 571$ per year.

For those prices, I would keep the 2017 because I think the benefits are worth the extra 171$/year.

If you want, you could probably replace the screen for a lot cheaper by bringing it to a 3rd party or even by doing it yourself (https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBoo...+Late+2013+Display+Assembly+Replacement/23392). You can get the replacement screen for 420$. At that price the 2017 is harder to justify IMO...

Also, with the reports about the 2017 keyboard reliability issues, you should probably get AC+ with the 2017 which would bring the cost up.

Plus how much of that $800 is the roommate paying for? You need to deduct that amount from the $800 price.

Great deal! At that price I would keep the 2017 without thinking about it twice!

One more piece of advice:
Either lock it up while you're away (so the roommate can't touch it), or... get a new roommate.

Since he was so generous to not help me pay for repair or new laptop...I kindly advised him the next time he touched my MacBook, the only thing I would pay for is to get said MacBook surgically removed from his backside....
