Fix for lack of camera?

Just thinking out loud here.....

If apple opens up the dock port for accessories, why couldn't a company just release a small camera that plugs in there? The screen can be viewed upside-down so it would probably function pretty well for video chats. I could see a company like Skype looking in to this. Any thoughts?


And yes, I typed this on my iPad hehe.
 
I don't think jailbreaking would be necessary, Apple started supporting Dock Connector peripherals with iPhone OS 3.0 I believe. There are already a few companies with iPhone app/peripheral packages so I don't see why a camera couldn't be made available for iPad too.

I would assume that Apple has a protocol for using the dock connector, and using a camera would have some different data types or whatever. I'm not a developer and I don't know what I'm talking about, I just don't think Apple would make it terribly easy for this.

But then again, what do I know.
 
How about going one step further. A video conferencing app that uses the camera in your iPhone as the webcam and your iPad as the screen. No extra gadgets to carry around and all wireless. I would pay for that.
 
I'm glad I'm not hung up on the lack of camera, this doesn't bother me at all - I have enough cameras!

Go look at the two apps I mentioned above. I haven't tried them but they allow you to use the iPhone as a remote camera. Can't remember if it was tethered or wireless right now. Haven't downloaded it either...so ymmv !
 
That iSight Lite might look good in the picture but in reality it would show the top of your head rather than your face or you'd have to position yourself in a specific position in order for the camera to capture your face.

Apple probably realized that the tablet form factor is not supposed to be used as a camera since it's too big and supposed to be used in different orientations/positions. If you want to take a picture use your phone or digital camera and then transfer it to the device. If you want to video-chat - use a laptop.

Now the real question is - is there an easy way to transfer photos from your iPhone to the iPad?

I'd think that it would be possible to then have the camera on a swivel.
