I have a MacBook Air with a sensor board logic error. It boots up fine and is usable, but the fan is loud and the machine runs very slow. Apple says it would be $450 to fix.

Could this be fixed for less, and is it worth it?

I am not that thrilled with Apple products any more, but I have a fair number of purchased apps that are for Apple computers. A PC is something I was considering, but I would have to repurchase my apps for Windows.

I don’t use my laptop to watch movies or play games.

Could any one Give me feedback? If I did sell the MacBook and get a PC, are there decent ones for under $600?

Thanks so much!

The Mac has near zero resale value unless it gets fixed. Find some one to fix it at a lower price and then keep it.

Why. What you should care about is the total amount of money in your pocket at the end of all of this. So, if you have to get the repair done before you sell the Mac then after the repair is done why would you sell it?

Not worth it. When looking at used SOLD prices on eBay.

Value of your model Macbook Air
- Working condition $350
- Current Faulty Condition about $175 (Since yours works but is slow this may hit the high end of defective at around $250. Still, sell as Parts Only.)

Repair Costs
- 4GB used Motherboard $200
- 8GB used Motherboard $250 (I'd recommend this if you did a repair)
- Labor (if not DIY) $100 to $150

If you had to have someone do the repair and you buy the part yourself. It would cost the same as just buying the same as buying a working one used. When you look at what you could have sold your busted Macbook Air for. It costs you more to repair it. Since you could have offset the purchase of a working unit by selling your busted unit.

If you do the repair yourself. You might break even between the buy/sell option vs repair option.

If you do the repair or get the same model used. I would certainly look at 8GB RAM repair/replace only. It doesn't cost much more but makes a big difference in usefulness. If you buy a used Macbook replacement. Perhaps look for one with a larger SSD or faster CPU as well. There doesn't seem to be much difference in price. You can get the i7, 8GB, 256GB model for about $400.

If you get a PC. I'd look at the Acer Swift 3. Reviews are good for the price range. It's fast and light with excellent battery life. It also has a good sized trackpad and decent keyboard.
