[FIXED] Device is not eligible for build error

I'm having an awful experience trying to update. Without going into too much detail, my main question is if there is anyway to make sure my iPad can be successfully updated (i.e. I don't get the "Device isn't eligible for requested build." error) without waiting for it to back my iPad up? For some reason, it takes 45 minutes to back up less than 15 GBs of used space (really? Time Machine when connected to my computer directly takes that long to back up 100+ GBs if I recall correctly) so I have to wait for that long, THEN see if it worked correctly.

Also, I keep reading that some people who have a jailbroken iPhone are receiving this error. While I do have a jailbroken iPhone, my iPad is not jailbroken, so I'm not sure why IT would be receiving this error? And for future reasons, what should I do to make sure my iPhone updates successfully?

Just fixed it (or at least I think I did). I successfully updated my iPad, about to do my iPhone. The trick that did it for me were these instructions from Apple's website:

The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store.

Open the Terminal utility located in Applications > Utilities.

When Terminal opens, open the hosts file by typing entering the following command and pressing Enter:
sudo nano /private/etc/hosts

Type your user password when prompted.
Note: This requires a non-blank admin password.

Edit the hosts file:
The hosts file contains some comments (lines starting with the # symbol), as well as some default hostname mappings (e.g. 127.0.0.1 – localhost).
You can navigate the file using the arrow keys.

If an entry is found containing apple.com, add # and a space to the beginning of that line.
Note: If this is a work system, the hosts file may be used to redirect to local resources, such as software updates. Consult your support resources.

(I found two lines with gs.apple.com on them, one with a hash mark already, but no space)

Save the hosts file:
When done editing the hosts file, press Control-o to save the file.
Press Enter on the filename prompt, and Control-x to exit the editor.
