fixing MBP scratch

this was my fault, but i put my MBP in the hatchback of my car where i also had a window screen and the screen moved while i was driving and scratched the top of my MBP something wretched. is this fixable? is there a scratch remover or some way to improve it at all?

You mean the back of the screen? AKA top of the lid. That thing is aluminum isn't it?

It all depends whether it's painted or bare aluminum. I'm not really sure, but if it was bare aluminum, you could rub it out with 400 grit sand paper. Then after that, sand it with 600 grit, it'll look like a mirror then.

You may not want it to look like a mirror though.

yeah, back of the screen. it doesnt effect the performanmce or anything but it is an eyesore.

I don't believe that will work. I think there is some kind of coating, it doesn't look like raw aluminium. I scratched my 12" pb g4 way back when, no way to repair it. It's a notebook though, if it were perfect it obviously wouldn't be used.

yah its a coating. sandpaper will just make more scratches.

The aluminium is anodized, not painted. There's not much you can do to make it look new again besides replacing the part.

What aquajet said. The anodising is the protective layer for aluminium. Once you get past that, the bare metal is damaged. The anodising on the MBP is excellent quality but it's not really condusive to having the hell scratched out of it. The only way to cure it is to replace the part.
