Flagging E-mails and Gmail

I have Gmail set up on my iPhone 4 through Exchange (not through the default Gmail IMAP). I was disappointed that flagging gmail messages in Mail.app doesn't star them, as I hoped, but only marks them unread.

As a test, I set up my Gmail account again using IMAP. This time, flagging a message DOES star it. But with IMAP, there you lose you ability to push.

Anyone else notice this behavior? Is way to use the default IMAP gmail settings and still get push? Or do we need to decide which feature is more important (push vs flag)?

Hmmm, I noticed this feature first the other way around (that my already starred messages showed up with flags on my iPhone).

I just tried flagging a message on my iPhone and it updated correctly (to read, starred) on web GMail. As far as I can tell, I have my Gmail account set up as a GMail account and not as a manual IMAP account. However, I have push turned off (for battery power conservation on my 3GS)....

But did you set up your account as EXCHANGE, or by clicking the Gmail button on the new account page?

I think probably GMail.

That's IMAP, which does use the flag-star behavior correctly.

Yeah. It might be that the issue is a loss in translation between iOS issuing an Exchange "flag" command and that command getting translated to a GMail new message tag instead of a star flag server-side.

On another note, it's a bit maddening that it takes 4 taps to flag a message:
