Good morning!

Just wanted a little advice here. I'd like to think that I'm not an artist and many would agree. But I've been drawn towards flash because it seems so fun and easy to use.

So I've been fooling around with some of Adobe's built in help/tutorials but was wondering if anyone could suggest an alternate source to learn flash 8. Any online guides or tutorials sites you can recommend?

I think learning Flash 8 and becoming proficient would be a great addition to my programming experience.

Thoughts?

Flash is not easy to use. In fact it is really really difficult.

If you don't need to learn don't bother yourself. If you need to learn the best place for Tuts are at VTC.com the first lot are free too.

Flash 8 Tutorials

How difficult you perceive Flash to be will depend on your experience.

If you know JavaScript, you will find the Flash ActionScript language very familiar as they now share the ECMA standard for the specification of the language.

I have used Flash from time to time for various projects and find most tasks fairly simple. If you want to do sophisticated animations, you may find yourself spending hours to get it right. Flash is a powerful development environment but with much power comes great responsibility.

That said, hop over to FlashKit

http://flashkit.com/

Some of the stuff there is really old--say Flash 4. Some of the tutorials are really well done and have great sample files. Some are not.

If you have never done any programming, you will get more out of Flash if you teach yourself JavaScript or ActionScript first. You may want to pick up a copy of Teach Yourself JavaScript in 24 hours or pop over to the website

JavaScript is fun language for manipulating web pages and even dynamically loading data via AJAX. Learning it would be tough at first, but in the world of programming its a really simple language.

Thanks for the advice. I've been programming for years and I must admit that I really like how easy action script is to pick up and run with.

I'll look into those tutorials too :)

Buy this book for starters;

I'm an artist, started out that way, but because of my interactive work over the years, mainly with Flash and earlier Lingo, I've been able to understand JavaScript and Java of course, PHP, Mel and have even started working in Objective C. It's all so simiiliar and dare I say easy to work with. :eek:

AS 2.0 is great, it's actually an OOP vs AS 1.0. I've been building everything in classes these days. Just getting ready for AS 3.0. :)

Here's links on learning how to program in AS 3.0, since it's right around the corner;

flash can be easy to use but when you get deep into rich codiing and animation it becomes very hard and very complicated.

That said a good catorgorised site for flash tutorils is this >>

http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorials/Flash/1

it links tutorials of load of sites not just 1!!:rolleyes:

How did you want to use Flash 8 such as just for the actionscript or to learn how to draw and animate things? I use it to make my cartoons and as of late I have been making short animations of my stuff. For me it has been easy to learn, time consuming but fun especially after you see it when it's finished :D
Also try here: www.cartoonsmart.com for help if you want to do animation/drawing/website usage.
Enjoy learning Flash.
