If you are talking about strictly animation, then Adobe ImageReady (version 8 and later) should work.
I use Adobe LiveMotion for creating Flash based content and sites. You'll still need to learn the scripting for many things, but it is far easier to learn than Flash. Problem is, Adobe doesn't make it any more. Your best bet is to find a copy of it on ebay. Version 2.0 runs natively in Mac OS X.
As 2.0 also out puts to Quicktime, I also use it for simple animated effects for movie files. It's not as good as AfterEffects, but I don't do anything that requires that type of professional video app.

Ehhhhhhh, I know this won't help you much but there is a very cool Flash software available for Windows called Swish Max, very easy to use and actually it can do most of the stuff Macromedia can, and it can also get really advanced but you need to learn action script language, but overall it is a whole lot easier to use than Macromedia Flash, most of the stuff is just drag and drop as well as easy to follow menus.

But again, it's Windows only but I really do wish they would make a Mac version for it. I actually emailed them about it and basically they said that they have no current plans to support any other OS except ***** Windows :S

I did the same thing last year, their response was the same only Windows. Too bad, I would of bought their software in a heartbeat. I have tried Macromedia software and found it to be like learning a foreign language. If Flash is like Freehand then screw them, I'll just have a PC bud make the stuff I need.

The worse part was when the client came along 10 months later and of course he'd lost the file he'd worked from so in order to make this "change" we'd have to rebuilt the site from scratch with flash.
Yeah, I don't work for them anymore, nor to I have a very high opinion of them.
That's not to say don't use swish, I just have bad memories attached to it.
swish is a good way to learn flash and frame based animation (if you want simple text...even dreamweaver can make flash text) but when you are ready to make flash actually work for you and not against you...you are going to need to learn actionscript. There is no easy work around.
I tryed flash and found it really good, but I don't think the price is right for what I'm using it for (just animation)
I prefer image ready for animated banners but there are times when your animations are more involving and you need to pull flash out of your hip pocket. I think I'll check that "swish" site out, thanks for the link!
