I recently shot a large sequence of pictures for use on a website. I want them to shown in sequence, fading from picture to picture. What would be the best way to do this? I'm guessing flash would be most effective, though I have no knowledge of how to use the program.

Is there any video format that will work? Say there is 3 seconds of each picture, is there any format that will compress all those similar frames of the one picture (effectively reducing the frame rate to 1/3 fps) to save space?

Is there any other way to do this?

Does anybody understand anything I'm saying?:confused:

Yeah flash would work, if your uncomfortable using flash give simpleviewer a try. Just edit your images and do some simple XML editing and your set.

Wow, that looks great. Can you use it to play through a slideshow without displaying controls or allowing user operation?

EDIT: Looks like it requires Flash... or am I misinterpereting the program?

SlideshowPro is a Flash component. There are many, many settings you can change. Hiding the controls is one of them. You can create your own if you want to as well. If you disable the navigation then it'll auto play for you. You can change the colors as well so it conforms to your site design. Check out the user guide PDF. It outlines everything the program can do.

SlideshowPro Director is a web-based utility to manage your photo galleries that SlideshowPro uses to pull the images and XML info from. You don't need Director but it's pretty darn cool and lets you avoid messing with XML. There are screencasts demonstrating how you can use each utility which should give you a better idea if it's something you can use before you buy. There are links on the homepage for them.
 
I think iWeb will do this, but I'd question how well and if you have to have .Mac for it. You could also do it in iMovie pretty easily and export to a .mov. The only problem with that is that there isn't the market saturation with Quicktime as there is with Flash. Plus theres all sorts of ActiveX issues now with multimedia files and the new version of IE for Windows. If you are sure most of your viewers will be Mac users or would be willing to install Quicktime, then that may be the best route.

Flash of course would be the best solution, but if you don't have Flash, it's a lot of money to shell out to do a photo sildeshow. If you're doing it in Flash, you may try the relatively new FLV format which is what YouTube uses for their movies. It's catching on pretty big in the Web world and helps keep file size down. If you have Flash and iMovie, you can even export an FLV out of iMovie.
