So, my mac pro with this flashed graphic card went down hill, when I accidentally updated it to yosemite not realizing the driver didn't work with it.
So, when it booted up, it was a dark grey screen with just audio in the back saying please select your language. So had to get into my temp hard drive in the mac pro and do a up a bootable maverick usb to load it back to how it was.

I bought this machine with the above card online, so wasn't sure how the subsequent OS X updates would affect it. It does have a nvidia low graphics card in it too.
Will try to reload the mavericks again.

Any advise. thank you

There is no need to do anything (not even flash) to make the 7970 work in Yosemite. It's supported natively. If there is another Nvidia card at there, may be you can just remove it and see if that's the cause of problem.

Mmm. that is strange. The system boots up to the startup disk selection fine when pressing option. I have a yosemite bootable usb and it shows up getting ready to install and then it skips to the dark grey screen. I can hear the voice saying to select language but cant see anything. I experimented with OSx Lion bootable usb and the installer actually showed on screen fine to complete the install. However, it never boots to the desktop. I get a wallpaper of sorts.

I also have a HDD on the system and that boots fine. I have an nvidia graphics card, I guess the stock one in the pro. I switched the monitor cable to that but nothing showed up on the screen.

Just wondering if its the SSD itself. I did the repair and test and looks fine.
Maybe, I will take it out and clone my drive from the laptop to it and see if that boots up.

The cinema display is connected to the 7970 card. So the card should work as I see the screen when it boots up. When i boot up in regular hdd, I checked to make sure the graphics card show up in the "about mac. I see both cards and radeon shows connected. The nvidia shows not connected. Not sure if that is causing any issues with the boot. Never game me issues when I normally used the machine.

Thanks it worked. The GTI card for some reason was affecting the bootup. I removed it and all works good. The above card works well with the the new OSX El capitan.

My HD 7970 works fine with Yosemite and El Capitan.
