I just upgraded my Mac Mini 2.4GHz, 8/320. Unfortunately, massive issues have occurred. My other Mini didn't experience any of these issues.

First off, under the Apple tab, the ForceQuit keeps blinking between the words "Force Quit..." and something Chrome (if that's the program that is open). I can select it and ForceQuit either one, but neither fixes the flashing issue. Logging out every 3rd time or so might solve it, but it returns eventually.

Secondly, regarding the 3 circles which expand, close or hide a window in the upper left corner of every window, I am no longer able to use. Close, hide or expand isn't accessible using those buttons. Clicking them is useless. I have to Control+click to get the contextual menu in order to close the tab or window.

Thirdly, when a dialog box opens, I have to use the Tab and Spacebar to enter an option. The Enter/Return key no longer selects "Ok" as an option. I have to tab around to highlight it, then hit the spacebar.

These issues occur system-wide and aren't program specific. We have also lost the ability to Command+Tab to select the open program. All it does is switch from the open program back to Finder. The program icon which used to come onscreen as this keyboard command is being used no longer comes up.

I'm wondering if upgrading to 10.10.3 will alleviate these issues, although I haven't read about any them yet.
If all else fails, I'm going back to Mavericks using Time Machine.

Upgrade to 10.10.3

ALL issues fixed. None of the previous problems carried themselves over to 10.10.3.

Machine is running as expected. A sigh of relief....

Unfortunately....

Ugh... Not fixed. The flashing of the Force Quit menu has reappeared.

The other behaviors have not reappeared at this point. I guess I had about 12 hours of positive workflow until this.

Has anyone else seen this in Yosemite or elsewhere? If it persists, I will have to downgrade back to Mavericks, because this is annoying.

Can you take a screenshot of the flashing so we can see what it is exactly? It sounds like a problem with Chrome rather than the OS per your description.

Where did you notice this behavior? It's oftentimes on the part of the programmer to decide whether a specific data entry should have an automatic confirmation button linked to "enter". We can check whether it's a bug that only affects your machine or an intended "feature".

Unfortunately, the screenshots I attempted showed the static menu selection of Force Quit. Its flickering at a rate that taking a screenshot did not show any issues visually. If you can, imagine the word "Finder" or "Chrome" flickering on and off after the words "Force Quit" in that menu. That's the only way to describe it. I also noticed it in Finder under the Go menu, 3rd from the top, Enclosing.... I can't read it as its flickering too fast.

I tried to video record it with my phone, but it didnt show anything either. I'll try another method later.

Neither of these issues is programmer behavior. Both issues are crippling the work environment. I do understand that some programmers force different ways to input info, but this isn't that.

Create a new user, reboot, login to the new user. Does the issue still happen?

I restarted my machine in Recovery Mode and and reset permissions from there. The machine wasn't showing the issues stated immediately before I reset permissions, and they haven't shown it since.

I did not try any of the other suggestions (PRAM, safe mode) so we'll see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestions.

This makes me want to kick the monitor, but since its a mini, I realize that will do little to solve the issue.

The flashing menu issue returned and has affected other menus in Finder as well. I decided to restore the last stable Time Machine backup that I had. After restoring the image, which took me back to Mavericks, the machine displayed the attached screen and has not been working since. I have attempted to reboot into Safe mode and have not gotten anywhere.

Can you boot into the Recovery partition (hold down CMD-R while booting). You can then reinstall OS X from there.

I have reinstalled Mavericks, which was the last backed up imagenin Time Machine. Not sure what to do next as I have not installed any necessary software nfrom TM. The machine is running fine with Mavericks 10.9.5.

Is it possible to reinstall software program by program via TM or is that only possible with the original program disks?

Another serious Yosemite OS X 10.10.~ bug

I have seen this serious bug active with designers using dual English to Japanese systems and so being crippled due to installation of Yosemite. The reports are that when switching to Japanese the ‘Flashing Force Quit” begins bringing with it a dysfunctional keyboard & trackpad which cannot be rectified until a restart. These are experienced Mac users and have been through all types of reinstalls, keyboard checks & testing as well as the plethora of general advice you might find around the Apple communities. The worst affected applications in my experience are Photoshop and Illustrator but I’ve also seen it in Mail, Firefox and Word apps of other systems. Symptoms including keyboard key combination failure and trackpad semi-death in professional applications renders working on a Mac with Yosemite installed virtually useless.
You made the best choice I have come across so far in reverting back to Mavericks and in support of your decision can only offer comfort in that the designers I deal with have done the same. Of course remember to submit a report to Apple with an outline of symptoms (if you can get your keyboard to accept it). If you are not using a bilingual function then this bug is deeper than I know of and has other ramifications. I read separately that Apple have dropped the Kotoeri language engine for a version of their own .... not as big a deal as Maps I guess. Best of luck, if I hear of a fix in the future I shall try remember to repost.

Re: Flashing Force Quit in Finder/Yosemite 10.10.2 plus other issues

We use Japanese and English inputs on all of our machines. I have started to see the flashing Finder issue in another Mac Mini running Yosemite, but its not as pronounced as the one that I have since downgraded to Mavericks. We use Photoshop quite a bit, but the issue is seen almost exclusively in Finder. Numerous force quits did nothing, and only after a few restarts would it stop. I'm not using the other Mini as consistently, so its not affecting me as much. I wonder if I only used English inputs whether this would have stopped the problem (although my wife's work would cease).

Can you post any links for additional research Taz Mangus? Anything would be appreciated. Japanese is not a problem.

Thanks for your assistance.
