Flickr Gamma?

I just noticed above the r of my flickr account is the word gamma.

2 questions

has that always been there and what does it mean?

So far I know that I'm ether blind or its new

Gamma is a name sometimes used for a product close to official release (it's supposed to be in better shape than beta test stuff). I think they only "upgraded" it because everyone else puts "beta" in their logos these days

I in fact was thinking about the title myself today. Is it just irony that gamma is a type of light ray and a specification used to describe color on a computer monitor? I think not
