Flickr....?

Since Mobileme Gallery is going away.....anyone here have any experience with Flickr...especially the Pro version?

While I understand I have just over a year to make the transistion, and it is possible that Photostream will do what Gallery has for me in the past....I'm examining the options available to me.

I currently have a Flickr Pro account and have no issues with it

Been using MM Galleries (password protected) for Family/Friend pictures and Flickr for everything else

going to move everything over to Flickr soon, but need to get around to re uploading

I use iPhoto for my photo management...have somewhere around 20,000 pics dating back to early 2001 (my first digital camera)...all arranged chronologically, etc. Also, I have a number of albums that I update as I add new pics.

Reason I mention this:

-Can I upload my events and albums (keeping their content) to a Flickr Pro account as I would my MobileMe account? As I read it, there are no limits on space, etc. with a Pro account.

Sure, no problem at all with that

No limits, ads get removed, larger image sizes and a few other things you get with pro account, cant remember exactly what

you could always give it a try with a free account see how you like it, there is a limit of 200meg/month of uploads and if you go over 200 images, only the last 200 will show, but they are still stored on Flickr

for me I think $25 for a year is not bad

SmugMug is by far the best looking replacement for Galleries.

Yep, Photobucket offers the same basic PRO services for the same price. I do not know about Flikr because I never checked, but Photobucket offers plug ins and apps for IOS and iPhoto. So you can share from iPhoto directly to your Photobucket account as well as access (think Gallery) from your IOS device as well as upload directly from your Camera Roll to Photobucket like you can do to MM today.

To me that integration into the apps and devices is key to the photo hosting service I will pick post Gallery if Apple does not offer a replacement over the stupid, short sighted Photo Streaming concept.

I want easy integration from my photo app to my hosting sight, snap, click, share, done.

The problem I have with flickr is that if you don't pay you lose access to your stuff. I forgot to pay one year and had to pay before I could even go in and view the stuff I had already uploaded. I guess that's better than mobile me which would summarily delete your stuff if you don't pay but it's still unsettling to face a situation where you have to pay just to see what you uploaded a couple of years ago. I should clarify that you only lose access to see the content you uploaded that goes beyond whatever you could upload and see with a free account. I stopped uploading to flickr after running into this the first time and started looking for something else. I'm still looking.

EDIT: Today I decided to spend a few minutes reaquainting myself with my search for photo hosting and found... I actively use Picasa. Why? Because I can order prints and pick them up at Walgreens. I've stopped renewing flickr and will probably never renew it again. For the 200 gig that I need, Picasa only costs $50 a year so I might just wind up with everything uploaded to Picasa by the time MobileMe goes dark. Still looking, but leaning toward Picasa. Heck, I might even stop using iPhoto and let Picasa organize photos on my Mac.

That is true, but is that any different to other services

If I suscribe to SmugMug and dont renew, what happens to my pictures?
If I pay for extra storage in Picassa, then dont renew what happens ?

Dont know what the above examples do, just putting the question there

I imagine that with any of them the pics either go away are aren't accessible until you renew. I just edited my post above to say I'm leaning toward Picasa because it has better photo ordering options. I can use Walgreens directly from Picasa whereas flickr takes me to snapfish and I'm not sure I can easily find my way to walgreens from there.

At some point I will copy all my MobileMe stuff to another host, probably Picasa. I've only got about 8 gig of stuff in MobileMe so I could go for the 20 gig tier at google/Picasa just for a place to stick the stuff.

I'm pretty sure Apple's PhotoStream will have all the features of MobileMe Gallery, including web interface, public URLs, sharing, uploading, downloading, etc.

Remember iCloud isn't even out yet. It all just started.

Based on what? Apple has clearly stated that Photo Steam will take the last 1000 photos and share/stream them to all your connected devices and computers. It said it would keep only the last 30 days of photos as well.

I do not see that being even remotely close to an online gallery that allows you to go in and look at any photo from any time in the past. I see that is photo sync and a limited one at that.

Maybe Apple will add a gallery option, but then again, they just announced that before June 1st of next year you must move all your photos from the Gallery to your Mac...sure doesn't sound like they are planning a replacement to me. Sounds to me like they are saying get your crap off of our servers before the cut off and find another solution.

You may not have to pay for a pro account....

I have always been a massive fan of google stuff, so most of my pictures are stored on picasaweb. Recently a friend of mine convinced me to try flickr. After looking at it online i discovered that i could get a pro account for free because BTyahoo is my isp.

So i use iphoto to store my photos on my mac and picasaweb, flickr and dropbox for storing, sharing, syncing and backing up.

I think the icloud service will be my service of choice if it does what it says and "just works".
