I purchased this app, and during the setup it processes 100 of my 300 contacts and then crashes to the home screen! When I tap on the app to restart, it just crashes to the home screen. I deleted and re-installed - and had the same issue. Is anybody else having this problem? I am so annoyed that I paid $15 for this!!

Has anybody used it yet? $14.99 is bit on the high end, wondering how well it works before I shell out the money, but this was the one everyone was raving about previously...

If you can't get it to work, e-mail Apple at iTunesStoreSupport@apple.com and request a refund.

Solution to the contact problem

iSpeak seems to crash on import when there are poorly formatted contacts. The ideal formatting is: first name in the first name field, last in the last.(with English characters only) I know if you have non standard languages or characters it may crash the app, also I have found that mega long first name fields may do it, example: first name last name address city state zipcode. You can comment out contacts you don't want imported by typing a - in the notes field. After going through your contacts if you find an odd contact that seems to be causing the crash be sure to send the contact to ispeaksupport@fonix.com so that it can be fixed to not crash with that situation. There were a few similar situations found during beta testing, that were fixed. The problem is trying to guess all the different things that people do with their contact list.

I went through my contacts, and I noticed that I have some contacts with more than one word in the first or last name. I also have some with a dash or numbers, and I have one with an "@" sign. I don't have any foreign letters or letters with accents. I haven't gotten around to going through my contacts and "fixing" them. I also have some long first name fields because they are general numbers for companies - and some companies have long names.

I don't mind paying this much for an app, but it should be working 100% if fonix is charging this much; otherwise, they should sell it at 50% of its price so that I can be a beta tester and let them know the issues with the app. I believe that it costs 50% more than any other voice dialing app. I was excited when I read about this app, but now I am highly disappointed because I can't even get it to run! I sent an e-mail to customer service but didn't receive a response. This is a MAJOR bug that should be noted in the description of the app as a known bug, because it causes the app to crash!!

Here is the description:

Fonix iSpeak (TM) is a voice driven phone dialing application for your Apple iPhone (original or 3G). You can make a call by speaking the number or the name of a person in your AddressBook followed by a location (e.g., home, work, or mobile: "Call John Smith at work").

No training or enrollment is required for iSpeak - it provides high accuracy "out of the box." iSpeak also performs well in noisy conditions.

Fonix iSpeak runs directly on your iPhone, which speeds up the calling process. You won't be waiting for a server to respond or worry about maintaining a server connection.

Because Apple does not provide access to Bluetooth(TM) APIs, Fonix iSpeak does not support Bluetooth at this time. We will provide this support when the Apple provides the APIs.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

fonix notes that Bluetooth isn't supported, which I understand, but it should also include some language relating to this problem. If you hadn't posted, I would have no clue as to why this app kept crashing!

I have used voice dialing apps on other phones that handle all of the contacts without a problem. This app should be able to do the same.

Thank you for letting me know that there is an issue with the app and that I'm not doing something wrong. If I don't receive a response or this issue is not corrected within a short period of time, I will be requesting a refund from Apple.

Update

When you have a contact with no name, or no number iSpeak will skip that contact during the import. We just found a bug (thanks to vandy1997) where when you have more than a few skipped contacts in a row it crashes. The bug has been fixed and will be in the next update. For now if you are having a contact issue this is something to check for. We found another possible problem when you have multiple non standard characters in a row it may also cause problems. So that's something to look for. If you find that certain changes fix your import problem please send the change to ispeaksupport@fonix.com so it can be fixed in an update. Thanks
