Font book displays correctly the Devanagari face (used for sanskrit) which is a windows TTF. But it doesn't work in either Photoshop or Illustrator, which usually works with everything.

Damn, it's OK I found the problem, I needed to enable the devanagari checkbox in "international" prefs. I hate it when I bollock around for ages then find the answer after I post.
