During my time at the apple store trying to decide on the right imac for me (still undecided) i noticed the font whilst browsing in safari was very "bitty" and blurred. Is this something apple plan on addressing in leopard and lastly is there a quick fix for it in tiger?

Welcome to the mac

It really depends on whether you like OSX font smoothing or not.

This issue is similar to the new iMac glossy screen. People either love it or hate it.

Personally I use TinkerTool to turn off font smoothing and force applications to aswell. This is because I am reading/writing text all day, so the blurry fonts drove me mad!

Here is some screen shots to show the difference (you'll need to double-click each one to show the full picture) ...
(1) Normal OSX with font smoothing
(2) OSX without font smoothing
(3) WinXP firefox (running under vmware)
