I’ve advocated for macOS on the iPad multiple times here, and will continue to do so despite the consistent backlash…

And I sold my iPad 5th-gen 9.7 last year because it was just so slow and glitchy and unreliable…

I swore I would never buy an iPad again until macOS was allowed to run on them.

Then last week I remembered why I stopped using laptops three years ago. My beloved M1 MacBook Air was aggravating my carpal tunnel again. As a person who depends entirely on functional hands for everything I do in life, I simply cannot have any injury. This pissed me off. I love that M1 machine. Best hardware I’ve ever used. But I have to sell it.

So I went and tried the M1 iPad Pro 12.9 at the local tech store…

And now I‘m typing this post on it from my bed. The 256GB Wi-Fi-only followed me home and I love it. The screen is unbelievable. Everything is so fast. It appears all the unreliability of my old A9-powered iPad was due to the ancient chip.

And Stage Manager. I absolutely despise it on Mac. But on iPad, I never turn it off. It has its quirks, and I don’t quite use it as Apple probably intends, but it has absolutely changed the iPad game. I even have one Stage dedicated to my four business apps and with all of them on screen at once I can very comfortably work from home on this thing. That was never possible before.

And now FINALLY I can read music PDFs on the go.

I still think iPadOS really prevents it from reaching its full potential, but I totally love this iPad Pro. And my wrists are already settling down. Worth it.

Let the “I told you so” commence.

Great of you to put your health first and glad you’re enjoying the iPad!

May I ask why the MacBooks trigger your carpal tunnel but the iPad doesn’t?

Something to do with the keyboard and trackpad positions being low and centered relative to my body. My wrists really don’t like that for some reason even when I’m being super conscious of my posture.

My desktop setup includes a Magic Trackpad put it doesn’t bother me cuz the spacing is much further apart and elevated

When on iPad my hand is at a different angle and I tend to do the hunt-n-peck with one finger most of the time.

Thank you for the explanation. I have found a desktop setup much easier on the body than a laptop as well because the keyboard and mouse can be placed optimally.

No “I told you so” for someone willing to learn and try - a thumbs-up is a more appropriate response.
This is my sentiments exactly!

Learning and trying to understand a certain feature or product versus... trashing due to it not fitting their specific way of doing things. Some people look at a feature such as Stage Manager and completely dismiss it without giving it a fair chance.

Mine iPad Gan 5 2017 32GB is still fully functional and never had a problem.
except using a bad lightning port in 2019 that ruined the port.
luckily I had that fixed and today that worked great!

now

iPadOS is not MacOS but some of the iPad's issues can be caused by hardware. In the 5th gen's case, it may be less an issue with the A9 but more the 2GB RAM.

Lack of RAM and swap has long been a complaint of mine on iOS devices. With 16GB RAM, I've been very happy with my M1 iPad and don't foresee replacing within the next 5 years.

I know Apple implemented swap on iPadOS 16 but thus far, I haven't noticed a difference memory management-wise between iPadOS 15 and 16.

yeah ever since the 2018 iPad Pro, and definitely since apple silicon introduction, the iPad Pro is a beast. it's a joy to use. I'm not quite sold on stage manager yet (I still don't get why window expand from center in iOS), but it is a big step forward. also I understand your pain, I love the bigger iPhone, and I took a risk this year and got it, and my pink has developed some sort of pain. its pretty terrible and I have to figure out what to do because I got two years of payments on this thing and I simply can't hold it comfortably.

there
there are post I wrote in 2018 here (MR) denouncing apple
I would complain to Tim and others with fancy ties and silk skirts personally.
but the iPad kept me in that garden, as a weed not growing tho.

Mojave was great step forward while the M1 elevated their MacBook and computer reputation today.
nothing synced well in 2018, now everything in 2023 is perfect!
even my 2007 iPod nano is working great!

Very interesting . I take it your a musician ( possibly a pianist ?)

How is the ipad better than the mba ? The mba is extremely thin and has a wedge design which helps the wrist position …

I went from mbp to mba solely because of that ,it feels so good typing on it . Maybe the issue is that it’s too far away for you?

And in case you use it mostly on a desk, you’d be better of keeping macOS and buy an external keyboard

If I can offer some advice: seriously, if you’re holding your phone with your pinkie at the bottom, you really should stop. Put the pinkie behind the phone with your other fingers. I’ve found that there’s something about having the phone weight pushing sideways on my pinkie that made it hurt and even go numb it I held it that way long enough. Once I stopped holding the phone that way, no more problems. It seems natural to hold the phone pinkie at the bottom, but I think they’re just too heavy to make that comfortable in the long term.

Yes, yes, yes! I paid considerably more for my M1 12.9” with Magic Keyboard than for a MacBook Air, and wasn’t sure it’d be worth it… but the display is amazing. It’s my daily driver now. Every now and then I think, “I should get a MacBook Air” but when I look at the display, I just can’t do it.

Hey, no need for someone to tell you "I told you so". However I feel that maybe things could have been salvaged with the MacBook Air. You can use your external trackpad with your laptop as well.

I for example would not use laptop keyboard or trackpad for extended period of time - not because of the carpel tunnel stuff though to be fair my right hand can get annoyed with the trackpad, but yeah it is mostly because of my eyes. I should not look at screens from that small distance.

Also ergonomically speaking using an iPad with keyboard is worse for your neck. As the iPad is smaller, it also sits lower so be mindful about this.

Either way you made your decision so I hope it works out for you. Enjoy your device!

Unless you use an SE or a mini, which are all pinkie friendly. 🖐️

Great, I never did that before with my pinkie but after reading this thread, I tried doing it and now I cannot stop. Stand by for my next post in a couple weeks complaining about posts about pinkies! 🤙🏼 😜

That’s totally what it is. Ever since you pointed it out I’ve been consciously trying not to and then I realize I’m doing it again out of nowhere. The phone feels like it’s slipping out of my hand if I don’t but I’m gonna kick this habit!
