Step 1: use an iphone/ipad to get the box.net app from the app store.
Step 2: use the app and make an account (involves setting up an email address as your username, and making a password)
Step 3: receive 50 GB of online storage FOR FREE
Step 4: you're done.

Note: unlike iCloud, you can put in any type of file you want in storage, and you can access your files with any device/computer. :cool:

Note 2: I'm in no way associated with box.net. I just happened to come across the offer when I was searching for nexus prime news haha. I tried it, and it works, and it's simple, so I thought I'd pass the info on. Cheers!

EDIT: Note 3: I got the app by going to box.net/iphone...I'm not sure if it's different than just getting the app from the app store itself.

Considering iCloud and box.net offers completely different services, I don't really see how one is an alternative to the other...

box.net is an amazing addition to iCloud though.

Well, they both offer online storage services, and in that regard, iCloud is much more complex than it could have been.

But whatever, it is what it is...and sites like Dropbox and box.net are probably happy about that. :D

box.net offers 50 GB of storage that you can use however you want, sort of like a USB thumb drive that's always there.

iCloud offers 5 GB of storage to sync your photos, calendars, iWork files on iDevices, and offers a tracking service and a specific e-mail.

They can be used as complements to each other, since they offer completely different services, which also is the reason why you can't compare them as you're doing.

You seem to think iCloud was supposed to be iDisk with additional features. This is not the case. Nor has it ever been presented as such.

Do you understand that just because they're both "online storage", they can't be compared?

Hmm, I thought there was a 100MB individual file size limit, and that the only way to manage files from a mac or pc was via a web interface, unless you pay for webdav. That might have changed now.

Waste of an app

Just checked the 50gig is not lifetime it says in the description its up to december 2 2011.

you can upload max 100mb per file

Kinda gay

The promotion is until December 2, but you keep the 50GB for a lifetime. The 100 mb per file limit is true though, which isn't enough for movies, but is plenty for most everything else. And it's free...don't see how it's a waste.:confused:

LOL. I was going to say...I only got 50GB for 50 days also but then I read the text closer: "As part of our 50 GB for 50 Days promotion, you now have a a free 50GB Box account..."

Meaning the promotion is 50 days long. the 50GB is for life. Yay!

Box isn't quite up to snuff for me but I have the free account so that as they grow I'll have free storage.

And on that note, SugarSync is offering 50% off the 1st year. SS >>>> DropBox and has a better choice of storage capacities. The free account is 5GB. You can sync any folder, not just the DropBox folder. I highly recommend.

I would hit the Box.Net site before storing anything there. While the promotion is free, there are file limitation sizes, which if you wish to change you need to pay the yearly fee for, which is cheaper than DropBox and Amazon, but not free.

Also, the upload is not encrypted (the app store says it is, the website says it is not), in fact the free or paid personal services offer very few security or other features. You also cannot sync your desktop files if that is important on the personal account. Free is good, but I would not put anything important or private on there unless you pay for the upgraded services. Seems like a nice service for basic storage but falls far short of what DropBox offers IMHO.

Just wait a few weeks or months until all the iOS apps are updated to use iCloud, and suddenly everything you use is magically synced across all your devices. That's going to be the huge convenience, and that's how Apple's iCloud it's different from all the "manually drop files on this partition in the cloud" services.

As for box.net: the free account doesn't support any kind of desktop application or syncing. So unless you're planning to download 50GB worth of files on your phone an manually uploading each of those files in the box.net app, it's not all the special.

You're better off using Dropbox next to iCloud for syncing files manually across all your devices, including desktops, and all free. And you can get up to 10GB of free space using the referral system. More than enough for most.

Just signed up for sugarsync...looks pretty sweet so far! Automatic syncing, easy sharing via email and/or hyperlinks and an archive for pure storage. And you get around 2.5 GBs of bonus storage if you play their little minigames for a total of 7.5 GBs of storage.

I, like many, jumped at the 50 gig Box.net bait-and-switch, only to feel supremely mislead in the fact that if I want simple file syncing between machines, its $15 a month!!! So, I deleted my account, telling them exactly why, and went to Sugarsync, got my 5 gigs free instantly, then keep getting some more here and there by doing little games. Its perfect for keeping my iPhoto library in sync between my desktop and notebook, just enough space to have some growth room, dead simple to set up, and once thats done, its transparent.

I have been using SkyDrive for a long time and it works great. Why are so few here talking about it. Maybe because it is from MS?

I too was pretty disappointed with box.net after learning the desktop sync client is pay only, but I kept the account on the theory market pressure will force them to release a desktop client. Otherwise, they are just not competitive in this space.

In the interim, you can use an FTP client like CyberDuck to access your box.net space from the desktop. Not seamless like Dropbox, but it will get your files up there is you have the need.

I signed up for the 50GB Box.net free on iOS. So far has been no use to me because there is no sync to my Mac.

I use my 2GB free Dropbox for everything.
