Humor me, if you would.

Pick up your D80.
Very lightly, shake it.
Do you hear a not-too-loud but obviously present rattling coming from inside the body? Is that just the shutter?

I think your theory of it being the shutter is a decent bet. Mine makes noise too. I wouldn't be concerned.

Actually, one more question

One more question for those still reading this thread -

The manual focus ring on the kit lens (Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G) doesn't operate particularly smoothly. As in, it always clicks a teeny bit, and every now and then it kind of gets caught, and needs a bit of extra force to keep going. I know they're different lenses, but none of this happens on my 70-200mm f/2.8 (which is an absolute beast - holy moly).

Does anyone else have this problem with the 18-135, or any other lens?

Oh...

Yes, I know that the manual focus is supposed to have a soft <stop> at the end of each spectrum - however, it feels like it's barely even there. I hope I haven't been too harsh with it.
