I am thinking of getting a Fitbit but if an android watch would provide similar performance(excluding battery) I would prefer to get one.

I don't know the answer to this, but as a Fitbit user I'm interested in the question. I hope the OP doesn't mind me tagging on a couple of related questions.

1. Is the Google Fit app any better when it is fed by data from an Android Wear watch? When only fed by motion data from my smartphone (which is how I've tried it so far), it's pretty bare bones compared to the Fitbit app fed by a Fitbit band.

2. What notable activity tracking apps are compatible with Android Wear?

The android wear watch will provide similar information to the Fitbit.

I recently moved away from fitness trackers that are measuring motion. Now I only use fitness belts measuring constant heart and exercise effort levels. The benefit is they show up on all the gym equipment and screens giving me realtime readouts during classes and I have a basic watch that syncs with it to give me realtime readout when outside of the gym.

With Fitbit / Jawbone / android wear on your wrist it's step readout is essentially flawed and can be cheated very easily (just wave your arm back and forth and watch the step count go up).... The watch heart rate sensors are not great and tend to only really work if you remain stationary. Reading heart rate whilst sweating from exercise they simply fail to read again making them pretty much flawed.

If you are a member of a gym, and attend a few times a week it may be worth investing in the proper heart rate chest belt than either the Fitbit or android wear watch.
