I am pretty sure I heard that Windows 11, announced today, will run on 64 bit Intel and ARM! That will bring Windows out of beta for Parallels VM use…

I did find this in what's new for developers, I'll keep looking!

New features for native Windows apps. Project Reunion is being officially branded as the Windows App SDK and will be released later this year. A new ARM64 Emulation Compatible tool will let developers build apps that run natively on Windows on ARM, and with ARM64EC, developers can mix native ARM and emulated x64 code in the same processes and modules.

Most likely only for the existing Windows on ARM devices like Surface Pro x, Galaxy Book S, Yoga 5G, etc. M1 devices don't follow industry standards so, for example, without UEFI it won't boot Windows on ARM.

The minimum requirement clearly mentioned SoC which is ARM. Are there any SoC based x86 chip?

Well, let’s hope that Win11 has better ARM support (abs better x86 emulation). The TPM requirement sounds like an annoyance, hopefully it will not hinder virtualization.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Microsoft has tried ARM processor and it didn't work out because the developers didn't jump on board.
Will Apple Succeed Where Microsoft Failed? | codebursthttps://codeburst.io › will-apple-suc...
It didn’t work out for two reasons: the performance was terrible (both the processor and the translation layer) and Microsoft didn’t go balls-deep like Apple. It’s the same problem with Windows 8 and onward. They wanted to be both tablet-friendly and desktop friendly and ended up being neither. So they refocused on their core audience and went desktop friendly.

Parallels tells me I need ARM based Windows 10 binaries for the M1 and points me to MS to obtain them. As for Windows 11, M1 based code doesn't appear to exist. So it would seem that the only use of Parallels for Windows on a Mac going forward would be on an old Intel based Mac. I have both an I7 Mini and M1 Mini so there is no hurry.

I have found, what I think is a very simple workaround, based on the same principle as creating the "ISO" method for Intel installs.

But it's even easier!!!

I am running Insider build of Windows 10 ARM64, on my M1 Mac mini.

According to reports, on a Windows 11 ISO, the simplest tweak, is to replace the Windows 11 AppraiserRes.dll with a Windows 10 AppraiserRes.dll, re-burn the ISO and begin your install.

Today, I was presented with Windows Feature Update to Windows 11, on my ARM64 install. This was downloaded originally as a VMDK on the Insider website, and I have kept it up to date for the past couple of months. Latest build is 21390.

The Feature update downloads and creates C:\$WINDOWS.~BT. I checked the Sources folder and there was a new version of AppraiserRes.dll, with date, 6/18/2021.

At about 8% download, a dialog box pops up letting you know that since you don't have TPM 2.0, you will not be able to install Windows 11. So I canceled, and was presented with a "Fix" for the resulting error. It does nothing, just starts over.

I copied a Windows 10 19043 appraiserres.dll over the top of one located in C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources, and it didn't do anything.

I opened a Administrators CMD prompt, and searched the HD for all copies of the file, and it showed that in C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources, the version was still Windows 11. I copied again, from elevated CMD, and than re-ran the update by pressing fix. This time it went passed the TPM 2.0 check, and the download percent started counting again, 17% and up.

I am not out of the woods yet, I am guessing Windows 11 traffic is pretty high, I have to start over again, but I can keep you posted.

I would like, to report a success. I am running Windows 11 Enterprise, ARM64, on my M1 Mac mini under Parallels.

The trick is, copy the Windows 10 (intel or arm64, does not mater, I used 19043) - appraiserres.dll to C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources, at about 8% download, just before the check begins... There is a delay from reaching 8% to the appraisal. Then at 9% download, after the check has passed, copy the original Windows 11 AppraiserRes.dll back to C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources... Because right around 30% installation, there is a system file check, and it will fail, resulting in error code, 0xC0000005.

I wrote a batch script to aid in copying the file, and I had backup copies of the original dlls to perform the copies.

This is not very difficult to accomplish and it does not impede the original full install of Windows 11 Insider Preview.

Going forward - I have read, as of three days ago, not having TPM2.0 and an Intel 8th Gen CPU or newer, is a hard stop for Windows 11. That is, Intel Core iX 8xxx and up. I ordered a TPM2.0 module form CDWG, but now it looks like I will need a whole new computer anyway. I have nothing with TPM2.0... Wait I have a ThinkPad E14 G2, with 11th Gen Intel Core i5. This may be the only device I have, that can officially run Windows 11. I have to check all my devices and see where I stand.

For IT, this is not going to be a fun road.
