I regularly stream the BBC iplayer on the iPhone across a VPN connection. I discovered last night that it was refusing the iPad as an unsupported device. Obviously, safari for iPhone and iPad identify themselves differently.

I looked online for some answers and found the same issues reported. Workarounds were said to be Atomic browser and the Sphere browser. Atomic browser with iPhone identification set would load the mobile page with play buttons but would not play. Any other ID setting yielded 'unsupported device.'

Sphere does load and play ok but it's an iPhone app.

Tvcatchup mobile does allow effortless live streaming of the UK channels.

I guess those are the options right now.

Cool. Thanks for letting us know this as I plan on using the iPlayer when I get the iPad at the end of this month.

Presumably, in time for the official launch, the BBC will have updated the service to recognise the iPad.

Also are you able to check any of the other on-demand services in the UK. Like 4OD, or ITV, etc.

Cheers

Does TV Cacthup work outside the UK without needing a proxy or VPN?

I'm heading to Canada for a year placement and don't wanna miss my shows for a year. :(

I recently discovered tvcatchup and think it's really good. I don't have your answer but I'll ask my dad who lives in Spain to try it out and post the answer then.
It's great that it has quite a lot of channels, one's you find on freeview such as E4 etc. Works well over 3G

Sorry, no. TVCatchup geolocates on the ip and locks you out in north America without a VPN. Even then, they constantly add known VPN addresses to their block list. I frequently have to shift to a different ip from my VPN provider. They seem to really want to lock it done to the uk/eu.

A little while ago they opened it up to the EU when the UK licensing rules changed.

Awww. This is another example of why people resort to pirating. I'd happily pay for access to TVCatchup on a pay per view basis but there is no such offering.

Thanks for answering. :)
