Many people (according to rumors) are saying that apple is going to release a new iPod with multitouch and wifi and more space. Not only is that no possible id like to discuss some reasons why it wont happen.

1. If the new iPod looked exactly like the iPhone but with more memory and no phone apple would have made the iPhone with a 20gb hard drive.

2. If the new iPod has everything that the iPhone does except for the phone, then Apple would be hurting its own sales something they especially do not like to do.

3. I almost 98% guarentee you ATT in their contract with apple stated they could not make an iPod which is exactly like the iPhone. The reasons for this are because apple made some crazy demands of ATT whom finally caved. One of the clauses inthe contract has to be that for the duration of the contract apple is allowed to use their technology in any product it chooses but is not allowed to market or sell a device with similar capabilities that would draw away from ATT sales. ATT is not stupid and they knew it was possible, ATT is not going to let this happen.

If you look at how the iPhone was built, it was centered around the phone aspect, after all it is a phone that will see daily use. Everything about the iPhone including the software and hardware was built around the idea it was a phone. Now the iPod which is a multimedia player is going to be built around just that, it being a multimedia device. If apple really wants to wow consumers they are going to have to come up with some MORE revolutionary for the multimedia player market then the iPhone.

So my conclusion is: We will prob see new iPods come August or September, but dont expect them to be anything close to the iPhone. Dont expect it to have WiFi or a browser or a 20gb hardrive in the iPhones form factor. I love apple and their product design team is amazing, watch for a new ipod that looks different behaves different and is VERY different from the iPhone.

One of the manufacturing community rumors is that Apple is contracting for much cheaper touchscreens for the new iPod.

No idea if that means no multi-touch or not. But who'd miss it on an iPod? Nothing to zoom there.

Not sure how well a touchscreen-only iPod would sell. Even more so than a phone, such devices tend to thrive on the user being able to feel their way around the menus when it's in a pocket. Some paradigms just weren't meant to be used everywhere.

The fact of the matter is, if people want a cell phone, they'll buy the iPhone. But, many people don't want AT&T or the cell phone aspect, so reguardless of whether or not there's no Multi-touch ipod, they will still never buy the iPhone. Most people aren't going to buy the iPhone to use it just as an iPod. Obviously, there are exceptions, but for the most part, this is how it is. As for myself, I plan on getting both the iPhone and the 6G ipod.

As for AT&T telling apple they can't put multi-touch into any other devices, I just can't see apple agreeing to this. I think multi-touch is Apple's future for many other products besides the iPhone.

No not true. There are things in the phone that take up space that would not be in an iPod. There are chips and antennas, speakers etc.

Not necessarily true. You are assuming they will be exactly the same but with no phone. I would guess that is not true. A widescreen iPod could actually use the full surface because there would be no speakers, etc. The form factor could be different enough to make two separate distinct products. There is a new patented for Home in iPod that could also make a 80 Gig iPod more useful than an iPhone for some customers.

I understand there are things like antennas and speakers inside, but the fact of the matter is the only things that wouldnt be included in the 6G iPhone are the speakers, mic and cell antennas. Regardless of how you set it up your going to have to make it a little bigger. The reason i say will take away from iPhone sales isnt because of people buying the iPod instead of the iPhone. The normal consumer is very uneducated. They suddenly see a touch screen ipod about the same size as the iPhone except it has an 80gig HD. They are going to wait until apple puts it in an iPhone. Im excited to see what apple comes up with because they truly are amazing, but if they use worse screens we are in for big trouble, as i actually had to finally return my iPhone because of the dot matrix and flickering.

Ummm. Steve already stated that the new ipods will have osx and multitouch. This is old news. As for wifi...only speculation at this point. Here is a link.

Edit: Vindicated!!!! Sheesh, just comes to show how so much speculation can be avoided by just LISTENING to Stevie J.

I doubt Steve would sign a contract that deemed so closely what he could produce and what he couldn't produce. He doesn't seem like the type of guy that likes taking orders from other companies.

And personally, I'm totally against a touch screen iPod. Yes, it would be nice while in the car or while waiting, etc. But I tend to ride my fourwheeler or do other activities while listening to my iPod, and I need that tactile feedback in order to change the song in my pocket.

However, I guess that could be resolved with a clicker on the headphones. I don't know. It will be interesting to see what they come up with. I think we all need to quit guessing what it will be like. Everyone tried that with the iPhone, and look how close they were...

I don't think the new iPod will be an iPhone without the phone, I think it'll be an iPhone without bluetooth, full wifi (I think they'll use it to communicate with other devices or whatever, not for web browsing), speakers, mic, phone, camera, and so on... basically an iPod with a full screen, touch screen. I wouldn't be suprised to see some of the fancy photo management be implemented in the iPod either.. maybe even an option to view our music like it is on the iPhone or with a virtual scroll wheel and the traditional iPod menu system.

I'll take those odds. You're completely daft if you think Apple is going to allow ATT to dictate what they can or can't do with their iPod line. ATT has no choice in the matter. ATT can't not let it happen, they have no say. They're the bitch in the Apple/ATT relationship.

I can 98% guarantee you that the next iPod will very similar to this...

why the iPhone doesn't have an internal HDD has already been widely discussed. I wouldn't have bought the iPhone if it wasn't flash. That said, I'd buy an 80-120 GB iPhone.

This thread is just retarded.

It won't look like an iPhone. It will look like a 5G iPod with a much larger touch screen.

Look at the size of the iPhone. Now look at the size of the 5G iPod. The iPhone is the same thickness when compared to the 30gig iPod. The 80gig iPod is thicker. Who says the same won't be true for the new 6G iPod? They can fit the hard drive and battery in there, it's not that much different if you think about it. And yes, the extra chips and antennas in the iPhone take up a majority of the space in there. Make that smaller and boom, you have room for a hard drive. A fraction of those chips will be needed for the iPod.

Jobs isn't an idiot like you seem to make him out to be. He wouldn't sign a contract saying he couldn't make his iPod the same type of device as the iPhone. It'll be much different really. It'll be simply the iPod icon part. None of the other stuff most likely with the exception of games and a clock and a few other "extras" that are included now on the iPods. It sure would make navigating around the various extras and menus a lot easier.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the two devices shared the same code. It makes a lot of sense. They can focus on building software simultaneously that works for both. Lots of shared code. Lots of shared hardware = lower cost to design and also build. Which makes shareholders happy because they're making more money.

I doubt it'll have all of the goodies you see on the sites right now. It wont have a browser, it may or may not have wifi, but if it does, it'll be strictly for sharing music with others in some shape or form. It'll probably have a few mini-apps that work like the extras do in current iPods. But the interface will have received a huge overhaul and obviously the benefits in the last paragraph above here.
