After following the instructions by the dev team for enabling tethering in 3.1.2, and downloading the Benm mobile config as per instructions I ran into what turned out to be a common problem. With the Benm config file, I lost VVM, without the config, the tethering option on my 3GS would disappear as soon as it was plugged into my computer. It seemed as though many of us were left with a choice, either we get tethering, OR visual voicemail, but not both. I then did a little research, and came across this: http://appadvice.com/appnn/2009/10/31-tethering-visual-voicemail-fixing-the-benm-mobileconfig-file/.

After removing the Benm profile, and downloading the one on this website, and doing a network settings reset, I got both VVM and tethering! It seems as though there is finally a solution to those with this problems.

This was posted while tethered to my 3GS, and receiving 2 new visual voicemail notifications in the meantime! If posting the link violates any rules, please let me know, and I will delete it.

FWIW, that mobileconfig sets your data apn to wap.cingular. If you have a legit at&t contract with an iPhone data plan, the data apn should be "phone"

grab the mobile config off my site (step 5) to set the apns properly. Make sure to uninstall the other mobileconfig file first!

(NB: it will work with data set to wap.cingular, but its obvious to AT&T that you've modified your apn settings, as factory phones use "phone"... Not saying they'll do anything or care, but they might some day.)

Thanks for the info! I can confirm that teathering, vvm, and mms all work with the mobile configs on appleguru1's site.

Sorry for the mix up everyone. VMM was indeed supposed to read VVM, or Visual Voice Mail. Originally the Benm mobileconfig enabled tethering for me, but messed up my visual voicemail. The original link I posted, as well as the ones appleguru1 mentioned both work flawlessly, enable tethering without messing up visual voice mail.

Sorry to be "dense" but which site. The site listed in your profile seems to be closed.

I tried appleguru's site, the mobilconfig downloaded but my internet tethering settings disappeared soon after trying to tether.
