While setting up my iPhone 4s I was setting up the icloud email.
I had an inactive dotmac account that was also my apple ID.

I was looking forward to using the .Mac email address again.
There is a setting that asks if you want a .me alias or something. Please do not push it. I received one email from the .Mac address after I pressed that thinking it was an alias I could no longer use .Mac again.

I personally won't use .me and would have loved a warning stating that the .Mac address will become disfunctional. Now if I send an email to that user@mac.com address it states user unknown.

Please be warned and if anyone has a way to get a .Mac address back please let me know.

I've been a .Mac/MobileMe user since '07, with several @mac.com email alias, and my primary @mac.com address, and they all made the move to iCloud just fine. In fact, Apple considers my AppleID to be ****@mac.com instead of the previous *****@me.com, though both let me log into the account just fine.

Same here. My .mac and all 5 aliases moved across just fine. The .Mac address is set as my outgoing address and all my other custom 'send as' addresses moved too.

The issue is that if the account is expired then the @mac.com email will not work.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4436

under the How do I sign up for iCloud? ->I have an expired MobileMe or .Mac account. How do I sign up for iCloud?

"To use your expired account for iCloud, follow the iCloud setup instructions and enter your expired MobileMe or .Mac email address as your Apple ID. If you have an @me.com address, it will be reactivated for email when you sign up for iCloud. @mac.com addresses will not be reactivated for email, but you can set up a new @me.com email address."

Yes, I saw that too in preferences window. I too have two addresses listed. I don't understand: if we can't receive email on @mac address, why even list it there? I hope apple will do something to make it go away once and for all...

are we all losing our @mac.com email addresses

I just got off the phone to one of the senior apple support techs, who just advised me that all mac.com email addresses are being switched off progressively!

I had 3 set up for my daughters, two of which recently showed 'user not found' when you send to their mac.com, although the me.com and iCloud.com still work fine.

I just spent 45 minutes asking why the two no longer worked, and was finally advised that they have 'started deprecating all old mac.com email addresses'

I advised the tech that as an IT Pro who has used my mac.com address as the default password-reset and registration email address for twelve years now I would be horrified if it was just being ceased without any notification whatsoever!

Has anyone else heard that they are being switched off, as this guy was quite adamant that they are being ceased??

HELP - time to panic?

I think the tech did not know what he was talking about. Mine still works and I suspect there would be tons of reports on this if they were shutting the @mac.com addresses down.

You obviously got a hold of a tech that has no idea what he's talking about.

Thread necromancy, the thread is 2 years old.
And I'll necro it again.

This whole thing has turned into a real problem for me now. For ages I had an Apple ID using a @Mac address. I don't know how it came to this in the first place, it happened years, years ago...
However, approximately 2 years ago I accidentally triggered a mail verification request and then noticed for the first time that I can't receive emails with this address anymore. Fortunately this was never a huge problem. Even though I never verified the address I am still able to use the account due my @me address being declared as "alternative Apple ID".
I once called Apple and they claimed that, once you entered a @Mac, @me or @icloud address as primary mail, it is no longer possible to change the mail address and my only option would be a new Apple ID -- something I'd really like to avoid as it sounds like a tremendous amount of effort.

Unfortunately I've encountered a problem now: a part of the developer area does not let me in unless all of my Apple ID's mail addresses are verified. It doesn't care nor accept my alternative mail address or Apple ID.

Seen this thread it might be there are more people having such a problem. Is there a reasonable way to fix this...?
