For Vista users (Appletime.exe, Weather Gadget)

For people who are running Vista on their Macs. I know the Boot Camp drivers aren't supported, but I've read of many people manually installing some of the things like AppleTime.exe. I did that - put it in Windows/System32/ and put a shortcut in Start Menu/Startup. It *does* load at startup... but doesn't DO anything. The clock doesn't get corrected. Does anyone have Appletime.exe actually working in Vista, or it is simply broken for now?

Also, the Weather sidebar gadget never updates for my location. It's always a cloudy 39°F night. It updates correctly if I change it to Celsius, or if I use a different location. What's up with that? :rolleyes: Is there a cache or preference I can delete somewhere? I know MSN Weather has the right data when I go to the webpage, so it's not that.

Run as Admintrator

I've had success with both AppleTime.exe and Display.exe on Vista RTM if you run them with the administrator privileges option. (Just rightclick the exe and click on "Run as Administrator".)

However, Vista will not allow programs to run as Administrator on login (at least not by using a shortcut in the startup programs folder) so this tip is of somewhat limited usefulness.

If anyone has any way to run an .exe at login with administrative privileges on Vista that'd be great !.

Actually I was recently able to get AppleTime.exe to work by turning off Network Time Sync (guess that was kinda obvious...). Couldn't figure out how to get Windows Defender to stop blocking it at login though (have to manually authorize it).

No luck with the Weather gadget — I've given up on Windows Sidebar, it's just not useful like Dashboard (seriously, why didn't they make it at least have an auto-hide option?).

I've wondered about the sidebar as well, I agree that the implementation is bad. Widgets don't need to be displayed all the time... Just when you need them.

Anyhow, I figured a way around UAC for the time-fix without disabling the entire thing.

You can use this program to make AppleTime.exe a service, set it to startup automatically and it will have the permissions it needs to fix the clock automatically. So far it's working great.

Incidentally, I didn't have to turn off network time sync but I haven't left windows running long enough yet for it to attempt to sync the clock, time will tell I guess...

Thank you. Vista really makes things too hard. I thought that disabling Windows Defender would let it run, but no. Hopefully this method will work for me too.

I've uploaded both programs required and some simple instructions to follow on my website here if you already have Vista installed it may save you some time having to download the Bootcamp Beta program, burn the disk, and extract the archive manually on vista.

With regards to the weather gadget not updating, I use the Accuweather gadget because it seems to be more updated for my location anyway. You can download it here.

Once you add it as a service you don't need to have it in your startup folder anymore.

After you remove it from your startup folder it should run at startup (as a service), fix the time, and then shutdown. (you shouldn't see anything except for the clock being correct.)

At least that's what it does for me.

You also might try adding it as a Scheduled Task as you can specify that a Task be run at startup with Admin privileges, that works too.

It should be pointed out that AppleTime won't fix your clock unless you have internet access at login.
