does anyone know if there is a way to force macos to only connect to 5GHZ wifi band when 5GHZ and 2.4GHZ are on the same SSID?

I've found some claims of people using a software called Airtool to do this but I couldn't figure out how to use the software to connect to a network

thanks

I don't believe "Airtool" will do what you want it to do according to their web site and the description of it. Can't you assign a different SSID to the 5GHz band? You should be able to do that from within your router's firmware menu. If you don't have access to the router, then I don't know of way to do what you want.

we share wifi with upstairs landlords. unfortunately they have switched to a mesh system that can only broadcast a single SSID. it cannot be configured any other way

Well then, the solution is to purchase your own router and set up a network the way you desire. That is, if your landlord allows you to have your own router. ??

I think the more economical plan is for me to just buy a wired mouse

?? From that statement, can we assume you're receiving interference from your BT mouse?

yes indeed. and a wireless usb mouse as well. it wrecks havoc on both of them. one out of every ten times or so it will connect to the 5GHZ and and they both function flawlessly
