Am I missing something but shouldn't a fancy iphone be able to do that?

Thanks,

the alarm sound is considered an alert so it's tied to the volume of the ringer/alerts rather than the in-app / music / video volume.

some 3rd party alarm apps may have their own volume control (tying them to the media volume noted above) but i haven't used any.

Third party alarm apps barely work unless they are the last app left open before putting your phone to sleep. Stock alarm app is pretty limited. Should have its own volume control and configurable snooze!

Well DND pretty much does this. It will keep all alerts silent, sans the alarm, and certain phone calls/text message if you want them to come through.

As the poster above said, Do Not Disturb is going to be your best solution. You won't get any notification sounds from any app except the alarm and you have the option of having the phone not ring at all or to only ring when someone in your Favorites calls.

Or even ring when anyone from your contacts in general calls (as well as if there are repeated calls within a few minutes).
