Not sure if this belongs in here or in Networking.

I have a VPN on my home computer for a work from home job. When I load the VPN, it's locking me out of using Messages. I don't think it's supposed to be as it doesn't block anything but Messages, but the company's IT department isn't helpful at all in resolving this issue.

So I come to you guys here for help in a workaround.

I hook up to Ethernet when working, but normally leave it unplugged and use wifi for everything, as I have most of my devices setup to interact wirelessly. Is there any way possible when the Ethernet is plugged in to route Messages through wifi? I'd also like to make it so my main browser (Rockmelt) works on wifi and safari to work on Ethernet when the Ethernet is plugged in and obviously still work on wifi when ethernet isn't plugged in

I found some information on another forum from 4 years ago but because I'm not a member, they are locking me out of posting right away. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post a link to the other forum, but the posters mentioned split routing and route entries but didn't really explain them

If the route to the internet is through the VPN I don't see that using wifi locally vs ethernet locally is going to change anything, assuming you want to send messages further than in your own house.

Great timing - I just came here for basically the same thing. I want it more for performance than for connectivity. When I turn on Cisco Anyconnect, my download speed drops from 1.2MByte/sec to 300kByte/sec. I was thinking of configuring anything going to my work network to go through the VPN and the WiFi while other local and Internet traffic goes through the wired Ethernet.

However, your idea of per-app would work to since I use specific programs to connect to work.

I've seen articles talking about setting up proxy servers and similar. While I know some networking and a good amount of Unix/Linux/OSX, I don't know how I'd set that up.

Thanks!!!

The VPN isn't needed to connect to the internet though. It's set up only to allow access to databases that I need to work from home. I can disconnect from the VPN and still use the internet, so I figured that connecting the Messages app to a second network independent from the VPN would allow me to use the features of Messages. Is this incorrect?
