The trash is here:
MrMuscle:.Trash mnewman$ pwd
/Users/mnewman/.Trash
Here are the permissions for .Trash:
MrMuscle:~ mnewman$ ls -lea@
drwx------@ 153 mnewman staff 4896 Apr 20 17:03 .Trash
com.apple.macl 72
I suspect that the extended attribute (MACL) has something to do with all this.

I'm able to list the files in .Trash:
MrMuscle:.Trash mnewman$ ls -lea *.jpg
-rw-r--r--@ 1 mnewman staff 1197014 Mar 9 09:42 2020-03-09 09.42.38-2-1.jpg
-rw-r--r--@ 1 mnewman staff 947503 Mar 9 09:42 2020-03-09 09.42.38-2.jpg
-rw-r--r--@ 1 mnewman staff 155921 Mar 9 09:42 2020-03-09 09.42.38.jpg
-rw-r--r--@ 1 mnewman staff 185565 Mar 10 08:25 2020-03-10 08.25.44.jpg
But I don't see that directory in Forklift and when I try to Go To that directory I get:
The item can't be opened

The file “Trash” couldn’t be opened because you
don’t have permission to view it.
I can look at ~/.Trash using the Trash icon in the Dock, but that opens the Trash in the Finder.

I can look at ~/.Trash using PathFinder, but the directory name is displayed as Trash rather than .Trash.

There might be a hint here: Quarantine, SIP, and MACL...

So, how do I look at .Trash using Forklift?

The solution to this is mildly interesting. I decided to go back to PathFinder and have a look at ~/.Trash. It turns out that the "Open With" was set to Finder. I tried to change that to ForkLift. PathFinder let me select ForkLift, but, it seemed the change was never applied. Have a look at the attached Get Info screen shot from PathFinder:

When I switch to ForkLift I was able to open the directory displayed as Trash. See the attached ForkLift screenshot:

If I do: ForkLift > Go > Go to folder...

And enter: ~/.Trash

I end up at the same place. Clearly there must be a symbolic link (alias) somewhere, but I don't know where it is.

I don't understand any of this. I hope someone who does will 'splain it to me.
