Anyone know anything about setting up a forum for a website useing OSX?

Any good guides or tutorials out there? had a look at http://www.phpbb.com/ and just got confused, dont want to have to use html if possible.

phpbb is based on php scripting language - which outputs html, it's easy to implement if you have an apache server (which there is on a mac) with php activated - you'll also need a mySQL database integrated with said server.

The "online language" my friend is html - you'll have to make do with it - you can't make a decent and easy to use forum using flash with a minimalistic approach.

You will most probably not have to code anything yourself, so once you've made the proper changes on your server you'll be good to go.

Umm, pray tell, what language would you rather use instead of html? :confused: :rolleyes:

There's a number of different open source/free forum packages out there including complete CMS (content management systems), it really depends on what you want and need.

I used phpbb on quite a few sites.. works great, they have tons of skins to give you a better look.. its as simple to set up as it can get, never had a problem with it yet...

It should be noted that phpbb is the MS Windows of forum applications - buggy and a huge gaping security hole.

If you like the look of phpbb go with something like punbb.

If you like alternatives try Vanilla.


None of these forum applications require you to know any php or html unless you want to modify the look or function of them. What you do need is a server with php and mysql running on it. And you need to know your mysql username and password and be able to type these things either into an auto-installer prompt or directly into a text file in the appropriate location.

Installing php applications might seem a little technically daunting at first glance, but they are actually quite easy. It typically involves placing the files on the php/mysql capable server and then entering your mysql log in information and running an install script by loading it in your web browser.
 
phpbb is an absolutely horrible program. Use vB if you can, best forum software I have personally used, and the new product system is fantastic.
