Forward Gmail to iCloud and reply with Gmail address

I'm looking to use iCloud as my main email source, BUT use Gmail as my PRIMARY, as I always have. I always use Outlook and Yahoo for various reasons, which all get forwarded to my GMail account.

I DO NOT plan on giving my iCloud address to anyone (friends, social networks, my job, etc.). But I do want to use it as my main email interface.

I know I can forward Gmail to iCloud so that's the easy part. How do I setup iCloud Mail to be able to reply & compose with my Gmail address instead of iCloud address?

Maybe I've missed something, but can't you go to the iCloud account prefs, under the Acc't Info tab, and select your gmail account as the outgoing SMTP server, and then check "use only this server"?

That option goes away once I delete the gmail settings from iOS settings and Mac OS X settings (I use Airmail on the Mac)

Not sure why you'd want to do this. iCloud.com interface is terrible. Usually most people want to use gmail interface instead...

I've been fighting this battle since the days of Mobile Me. Frankly I've given up on Apple ever allowing iCloud to be used as an "aggregator" account where you can "reply as" whoever the email was addressed to. I suggest you stick with using gmail as your primary email and simply ignore iCloud. I ignore iCloud. I ignore Outlook. I ignore Comcast. Ignoring Apple email is just another on a long list of things that don't work quite right that I choose to ignore.

In my case it's even worse. If I log in to gmail as "login x", Apple insists all my emails go out as loginx at gmail dot com rather than whoever they were addressed to even when I'm using gmail. So you know what? I wind up using the gmail app on my iPhone. It's actually easier to compose and send an email on my work-issued Galaxy S4 than it is on my iPhone 5. Shameful but true. I spent some time at the Apple store talking to the geniuses about "reply as" and they said it was an "advanced feature". I had access to this advanced feature on my blackberry phones and on any android device and even on the gmail app on my iPhone 5. Doesn't seem so advanced all of a sudden does it?

Ya, I'm sticking with Gmail. iCloud is just too flaky and the inability to reply to the email address it was sent to automatically is a show stopper. I'll stick to iCloud for Contacts and Calender only.

I have found that you can do this on OS X with Apple Mail, but I have not come up with a reliable solution for anything else.

What you are asking Gmail to do is 'relay' email from iCloud.

Email relaying is a major no no in the internet world. Alot of the spamming comes from unrestricted email servers 'relaying' messages from another machine or user. THAT is why you have to log in to the service and send FROM that service.

And the Gmail app sucks that much? I've thought about getting a Gmail account, but I'm happy with the accounts I have. Plus I don't want to give Google any more of my information. They already know far too much about me as it is...

I think that the SMTP subsystem on OSX is richer than on the iPhone, which makes sense on a certain level...

I have a number of server based rules that presort my incoming mail into various mailboxes. I started this originally with Outlook and Exchange and used that for years. I find that the native mail client on OS X and IOS enable me to continue that technique much easier than gmail. While it can be done in gmail, I found it difficult to work the way I want.

I also find gmail's web interface less than intuitive. I've always preferred email clients to web mail for handling large amounts of mail on slow connections.

Different strokes for different folks. If gmail works fine for some, great. It just doesn't work that well for me.

I'm with you on the Gmail filters. I've got a lot of them set up but I can never be sure they're doing what I want them to do.
