iPod Found a 1G (5GB) iPod!

I managed to get my hands on a first generation iPod 5GB

Except I don't know how to get it to work, its stuck at the apple logo . I thought it might be dead, but I put it in diagnostic mode, and it passed the HDD test just fine, and It works in firewire mode. I'm able to drag files onto the iPod just fine. It seems its not completely dead, if at all. iTunes does not recognize it either. It shows up in the finder just fine.


Anybody know if I can get it to work at all?

I have a MBP unibody (if that matters at all). Thanks

maybe you need an older version of iTunes??

or maybe its dead in a different respect, like something that tells iTunes that its connected (that part might be dead). who knows

I don't have an answer for you, but does Disk Utility reveal anything about it? Like does it indicate that it knows it's an iPod as opposed to just an external hard drive?

I wonder if you could download an older version of the iPod restore utility and run that on it to format and replace its firmware. It used to be a free-standing application before getting folded into iTunes.

Update:
So, while in firewire mode, the iPod had iTunes 2.0.1 in the finder window and it was able to recognize it. I was even able to add some songs to it. Only problem now is, when I disconnect it and reset it (to get it out of firewire mode) it remains stuck at the Apple logo

I've got one in a similar state. It passes diagnostics but still randomly locks up on boot and other times. I've replaced the hard drive but I'm pretty sure it needs a new mainboard. I intend to send it for repair someday...

Maybe the HDD is failing? I would say try a spare HDD or cf card if you have the adapter(if you have either laying around) and do a restore and see what happens from there?

Still no luck on restoring the iPod. I can't find any utilities capable of doing so. iPod Updater 2005-11-17 won't even install under Leopard

VMware Fusion does not virtualize firewire, so no luck there either.

Finally got it to work!

I had to search really deep into my archives to see if I had a back up of my PowerBook by any chance, and I did!

I had to use the old-school iPod software updater, as this was before Apple started using iTunes to handle iPod restores. Once I restored using the old software iTunes 9 loaded the 1G iPod with no problems whatsoever.

Guess this means I still have plenty of use for PPC software, so I'll definitely be installing rosetta in Snow Leopard.

Best $15 I've spent!
