I've confirmed this to be a 3G and 3GS error. Also contacted Apple support to confirm I wasn't losing my mind.

The photo app incorrectly orientates the photo from landscape to portrait if you point it down at a desk, i.e. shooting a piece of paper. Not sure at what angle this occurs, so let the tests begin: first holding landscape, shoot directly at a wall and then slowly flatten the iphone, keeping the shutter button and preview icon in landscape mode, at some point it will stop saving photos and videos in landscape mode even though the shutter button and preview icon remain landscape. I like shooting documents and stuff on flat surfaces. Very odd they didn't catch this.

If there's a bug in something, I will find it. :)

I guess not enough of there staff

sneaking into Microsoft office trying to get sneak photo's of the next Zune or Bill's next big project. ;) interesting this is a must fix for the cooperate spy's out there.

you're correct...sort of

you have to follow my instructions. it does work to a point, but when you get closer to flat, it changes the saved orientation from landscape to portrait even though the button and preview remain the same.

not being a dick, but next time read it more carefully and test it for yourself.

you have to tilt the phone sideways first, then point it down... this is not a bug, it's just how it works.

No, he's right; although the camera icon indicates you're shooting in landscape, photos taken are saved in portrait. Just tried it out myself. Weird error.

This, I was in the CN tower trying to take pictures down through the glass floor and although the displays was in landscape when you actually take it it's saved in portrait.

its a minor/major error

but its still a fairly odd bug that can get annoying if you like shooting documents or using evernote or whatever. having to re-orientate photos is a general hassle that we're way beyond in 2009. :)

weird...i just encountered this yesterday...using the desk keyboard and a slight angle worked just fine to correct it

Holy crap, I thought that was just me! Major...minor...whatever, it's a pain in the ass. I've lost a bunch of pictures because of this stupid bug.

So wierd reading this. I was trying to do this before and it kept changing to portrait. It was doing my head in. Had to do it on a slight angle instead.

I think OP is genuinely on to something. After re-reading the his post and several others, I too have found this.

But it's not too crucial, considering the majority of the 20+ million iPhone users aren't all that bothered IMO :)
