Foxconn to ship 15.4-inch MacBook to Apple in May 2007

Foxconn Electronics (the registered trade name of Hon Hai Precision Industry) will produce a 15.4-inch MacBook model for Apple for the first time, with shipments to commence in May 2007, according to sources at notebook makers.

Because of the new order, Asustek will no longer be the sole supplier for Apple's MacBook, the sources said.

Both Foxconn and Asustek declined to comment on the news.

Vincent Chen, an analyst at Credit Lyonnais Securities Asia (CLSA), was quoted by a Chinese-language Commercial Times report last week as saying Foxconn will start volume shipments of one new MacBook model to Apple by year-end, while Asustek will see its notebook orders from Apple cut by one-third in 2007.

Following the launch of 13.3-inch models, Apple has decided to push 15.4-inch notebooks, the sources said.

Asustek was the sole supplier for 13.3-inch MacBooks in 2006, with the monthly shipment volume for the segment reaching 200,000 units, the sources indicated.

In the second quarter, when Apple officially launched Intel-supporting MacBooks, the company shipped over 800,000 notebooks in the global market and saw an industry-leading growth of 59.5% during the period, according to Gartner Dataquest.

In related news, Foxconn will further compete with Asustek when it starts delivering Play Station 3 (PS3) game consoles to Sony in February 2006, sources said.

What IS happening is that Foxconn is going to be supplying additional 15.4" MacBook Pros to cope with an expected increase in demand. Digitimes once again mixed up the information.

These guys predicted that G5-based PowerBooks and iBooks would be arriving in early 2005.

It's called trying to use a big name to draw attention to yourself.

It wouldn't make any sense for Apple to do such a machine. Of course, with all the fun the machines seem to have generated, Apple might be looking for someone to do better work on the current line.
