Frame bent/ glass broken. 21.5" iMac.

Ok, so I got my iMac and the glass is cracked.

It'd been sitting in the box hidden for a few months, as a gift from my family. They actually stored it at my grandmas house in another state for the time since it was purchased, back in May. Was originally a graduation gift, but I ended up not getting it then because we went traveling. Thought the traveling was my gift, so I thought nothing of it.

Fast forward to early September/ late August... It gets brought to our house, I am totally shocked/ surprised, I open it, and, the glass is SHATTERED. I actually thought I was SOL, still do. But I've decided to research this, and found it was a known issue and that Apple fixes it?

Since it's been so long since purchased, do you think I will have any issues at the Apple store, or do I just explain the story and they'll understand? What can I do?

Top left corner is slightly bent, but noticeable to the naked eye, top is scratched, and I am using the iMac without the glass for the time being.

Should I call Apple, or go to the store?

The fact that you've decided to use it instead of immediately returning it when you found the problem will work against you, IMO, together with the amount of time that has passed.

You're best bet will be to schedule a Genius appointment and explain the situation. Hopefully the Genius will be sympathetic.

Posting a couple of pictures may be useful for us to get a sense of what you're dealing with.

Thank you for the insight! Kind of echoing my sentiments on the matter.

Scraped top, I never look up there, so not a big concern to me, still sucks.
 
Why would anyone in there right mind plug that in and use it? I would have definitely returned it immediately. Doesn't matter as long as it was a gift and you can prove that it was broken ahead of time. All you had to do was take it back with an explanation. But un-boxing and turning it on was a pretty dumb thing to do. Should have left it in the box soon as you noticed something was wrong. Your curiosity might have been your undoing. :eek:

Dang it.. Think it's still worth taking in and trying? Should I just call them?

Note that Apple will be able to tell when the machine was first powered up by you and also how many total hours it has been powered up.

With damage like shown in the pictures, it's highly doubtful that the machine would have been sold at the store. Apple can and likely will say:

1) We wouldn't have sold you a machine in this condition and saying it took five months to notice any damage is not a credible story; not our fault.

2) It might have gotten damaged in the trip from the store to the purchaser's house; not our fault.

3) It might have gotten damaged in the trip from the purchaser's house to your house; not our fault.

4) Your might have accidentally damaged it yourself; not our fault.

Unpacking the box and using an obviously damaged piece of electronic gear is just plain dumb. If Apple has any sense, you're going to eat this one.
 
There is NO WAY you 'put the glass back on' in that condition. There is NO WAY you could the glass off in that condition without pulling it being in pieces.

Why are you trying to convince people in a forum? We have no say as to whether or not you will get a free replacement. You only need to convince Apple employees, but that won't happen.

Your best bet is to purchase new glass and deal wit the fact that you have a bent case.

Hopefully the Apple store will be able to tell you have only just started using it.

Is there any damage to the box? If not, they wont believe you.

Also for a dent like that it cannot have happened during transit. The dent is impact damage so something would have gone through the box and keyboard on top of it. The Mac must have been dropped before or after it was in the box.

I use to deal with cases like this all the time when i worked in retail management.
 
I actually believe you could be telling the truth.

The problem is, it isn't a very believable story.

If you were within a few days of purchase, you could probably get them to accept it was that way out of box, but I doubt it now.

Did they use a credit card? Some credit cards give you like 90 days of protection for stolen and accidentally damaged / non returnable merchandise. The coverage is often capped at a few hundred dollars, but it might be better than nothing if it was purchased on such a credit card.
 
Extra Follow up -

Does the damage on top bug you? If you had a new glass piece, would it be almost perfect?

If so, you might consider finding a place online to purchase the glass front, and then just eat the cost of that yourself.
 
I stand corrected. I still think your best bet is to purchase the glass yourself. True or not, your story wont be well received.

So... you got a 27" iMac with a small crack in the bottom left of the glass that actually smashed in may and the 21" with scratches on the top, a dent and broken glass in august/september?

Definitely not a troll. I'd explain the story to you, but I'm sure you'd just take it, swish it around, call it a lie, and me a troll.

I knew this story sounded familiar. I remember his post from ages ago about the other iMac. This guy appears to have several iMacs that just sat around for x amount of time, and just happen to be cracked.

I'm sorry, but I really just don't buy it.
 
so lets assume its a true story
you could go to apple , its sounds so much like bad excuse that it could really be true , but if you have no luck at apple

take the iMac apart completely very very carefully ,without damaging it further , its still working and the actual display too , then bring it to a good car bodyshop ,i recommend one that has specialised in AUDI they will be able to bend it back in shape without any sign of the drop (its aluminium same material as in the wings of a audi which get bend too sometimes due to some impacts ) then go to apple to get a glas panel , that way you got a working iMac that looks fine again apart from the scratches at the top , but i have a idea for that too.... polishing , aluminium can be polished even to a chrome like mirror finish or you could get it anodised in a cool color ..maybe blue ?

Families do usually talk about gifts, especially when it comes to expensive ones.

So... I guess you have a special kind of family because they bought you a 27" and a 21.5", roughly at the same time?

Where is the part about "this has happened before"?
 
It's interesting that your parents bought you a 27" iMac for graduation, then bought you a 21" iMac the same month they gave you the gift. Do they just randomly surprise you with iMacs every few months? :p
 
hmm sounds like a coincident , but if i order a present for a family member and it arrived in the box even if i have no knowledge about the actual functions or such of the item , its a present so i dont need to know about it , but the first thing i do when i get a parcel ...is opening the box to make sure it arrived in one piece , as you are supposed to do ...especially if that happend before that something arrived broken , yes you read right doubts coming up ....about the truth of that story

So no damage to the box, none to the styrofoam inside, the thin foam cover + the plastic covering the screen? This is where I'd call shenanigans, so..... you saw all of his damage and still decided to turn it on and then decide to get it replaced. How the hell did the top get jacked up like that in the box, smells like BS and attention whore.
On top of the previous posts from earlier this year....if I already had a screwed up 27 iMac then why would someone have bought me an equally screwed up 21 imac as a replacement.

Anyway... I find it very interesting that your parents bought you a 27" iMac for graduation, then bought you a 21" iMac roughly at the same time they gave you the gift.

I also find it very interesting that both iMacs had cracked screens out of the box.

Edit: I guess that we will never hear your "explanation" because you got banned... again.
