At home I have a broadband connection, however when I am visiting family or such I would like to be able to have access to the internet on my PowerBook.

Back when I was using a windows notebook I managed to find a free 56k provider but can not remember what it was. I think Apple should offer 56k to .Mac subscribers since we are paying 100/year.

Does anyone happen to know or use a free 56k service? I might be willing to pay if it is extremely cheap.

Or is it possible to use AOL dialup without using the AOL software, just an old fashion user/pass with a phone number. I have a friend that said he would make me an AOL account that I can use if I need internet.

Is it possible to run a service on a home machine that will pretty much turn it into an ISP and i can dial into my home machine and get internet?
 
This may not help but your broadband service may include dial-up access. I have dsl through AT&T/Yahoo and they include dial up access with my service. I've used it when traveling and dial up the internet with my personal notebook at work.....

I have Road Runner High Speed Online (Time warner) and they too provide free dial up with loads of numbers. You should check your ISP.
 
I got into contact with them, they said they do not offer any dialup services. My ISP is Comcast. :(

Do you mean your friend will create a screen name for you on his account? then download the free AOL software and sign on with it....that makes your internet connection and then you can launch any browser you want to use, safari, firefox, whatever, you arent restricted to using the aol browser at all once you're connected......aol will just run in the background while you're browsing

the thing is that you and your friend cant be signed on to AOL at the same time because you would both be using screen names from the same account......if I understand what you're saying he's going to do for you

That is what I was aiming for but I didn't want to have the AOL software installed. I thought maybe I could setup a dialup account within OSX manually.
 
Juno has free dial-up. Its limited but I dont remember how much. I used it over a year ago when your internet was down for a couple weeks.
 
unfortunatly neither Juno or Netzero offers their free package for Macs, although they do offer lost cost service that will worl on a Mac
 
Are you a student at a university?

My university gives us free dial up...only problem is it's a local number so it could rack up long distance charges.
