free IMAP mail options

I've recently tried to find a good free mailservice supporting iMap, but so far I've no good luck.. :cool:

YAHOO - removed their IMAP support a year ago, so no go there anymore.

AOL/AIM - U.S. only. Has iMap support but no option to select another country when signing up, so I guess they don't really want foreigners to sign up either. (They're almost only marketed in the U.S. so I can understand why.)

GMAIL - I use this now, but there's no iMap, which makes me sad.. :(

.MAC - has iMap, but is not free. ;) (I'd wish they'd atleast provide a 100MB free .mac mail adress to all Mac users, but if they did it would only be POP anyways..)

Then there's stuff like Bluebottle, Crazymail and so on, but I don't know how reliable they are, so I thought maybe you knew about some good services?
 
Yahoo! is certainly IMAP. I believe it is P-IMAP, which allows the PUSH functionality (which is terrible anyway), but it should still be IMAP-compatible
 
Everyone on here states the Yahoo free email used with the iPhone is IMAP based. That said its only for the iPhone and you can not set up IMAP on your PC to access mail. POP is the only protocal supported by Yahoo for the PC.
 
I'd want to use IMAP for computers too, so yahoo is out of the question then.

I found out that AIM mail accounts are available to international users aswell as americans, so I made an account. IMAP working in mail.app right now, terrific! :D

Folders and everything just works! Now I'll test the adress for a while and see if it's worth replacing my gmail. And then I'll be prepared for an iphone (eventually) . :)

Now next up is finding a good iDisk replacer.. (though that won't sync to the iPhone when I get it, this will sort of replace .mac aswell. :) )
 
I'm sure your school or work should have IMAP support?
I had trouble getting the MS Exchange servers from my school email working on my iPhone. Instead I just set it up in Mail on my iMac and when I plugged in my iPhone it synced my email info.
 
I dont understand what the problem is. I went and signed up for a new yahoo account on my desktop then went to my iphone put in the email address username and password and now I can get my email on my phone or on my desktop. Whats the problem?:confused:

Snook, now if you delete a message or send a message, check your Yahoo mail account and see if deletes the message and the sent message makes to your sent folder on your PC.
 
The AIM webmail appends an advert to sent email and doesn't allow you to change the From field. I decided I didn't want my email at the whim of AOL so I'm using Fastmail. I think it's worth 20 bucks a year.

Ya know I did'nt think it would happenen but it did. This was the first time I logged in on my desktop computer and every email I sent on the iphone was in the sent folder and everthing I deleted off my iphone was deleted. Was this not suppose to happen? Seems cool to me.
I also noticed as published in an above post that this email account does not have the option to auto check. Also under advanced menu there is something called IMAP path prefix though I am not sure what that does.

My guess is that you are talking about the Web Interface instead of using something like Outlook via IMAP. Right?

Yahoo Email for the iPhone is a form of Push IMAP Email. What I mean is that if you are on the Web Interface or on the iPhone your are in Sync. Like you said what ever you do on either is updated within seconds on the other.

What others would like is to do the same within Outlook. So that whatever you change in Outlook or the Web Interface or the iPhone is reflected on all. But for Yahoo this is only supported with the Web Interface and with the iPhone. So not full IMAP Support for all clients. I use it the way you do.

I like Fastmail a lot, but for some reason, Apple's email apps can't seem to work correctly with it. Not sure if it's a Fastmail problem or a general incompatibility with IMAP, since I no longer have other IMAP accounts to compare.

iPhone: For some retarded reason, there's no option (that I've been able to find) to immediately erase deleted messages. The shortest duration (which you can set in Preferences) is 1 DAY!!! :rolleyes:

Mail: Selecting "Erase Deleted Messages" doesn't remove the deleted messages from the server. I have to quit Mail in order to make this happen. In addition, there's no way I've found to select the "Sent" folder. So, Mail insists on creating a new "Sent Messages" folder, instead of allowing you to use the existing (Default for Fastmail) "Sent Items" folder. At least the iPhone lets you choose this.

There's also a few minor things I've found that bug me, but I put up with it for some reason. I'm tempted to go back to Eudora, which worked PEREFECTLY with Fastmail (and IMAP in general).
