I'm planning to buy a Macbook Pro with my friend's education discount. The thing is Leopard is coming out soon and possibly a new rev. I'm having a hard time deciding if I should buy it before the free ipod promo ends and eventually purchase Leopard, or wait till Leopard comes out.

Assuming Leopard will be priced similarly to Tiger at $69 edu, the iPod (at $179) is a better deal.

the wait for my first mac is going to kill me, especially with school starting and WWDC :D

The education discount hold out until September 16th. Last year the iPod Nano was released well within the old discount that had an iPod Mini. I believe the Nano was added to the rebate.

I'm at least waiting for WWDC.

just out of curiousity can you also get the free ipod rebate at a local apple store or is it just an online offer?

Thanks,

Danny

I believe you can use it in-store or online. I'm not sure though. I've seen the Apple-Store Staff wearing Nano + Macbook Promotion shirts.

You have to buy a Mac that falls under the rebate and an iPod on the same receipt if you buy it in store.

well now i've factored in a few more things so it makes it even harder to decide

first of all, if i buy a mac before july 17th, i could get a free ipod + a free printer, a $280 value.

2nd, if i choose not to buy before then but in fact, wait for WWDC and buy approximately a week after WWDC I could still get a free ipod and possibly a macbook revision.

3rd, if i choose to wait for many mentally painstaking months until xmas, the free ipod would not be added but I would most likely recieve a MBP with Leopard and this is the real thing bothering me, possibly a merom processor

im completely stuck on this one, it's baffling me.

Don't expect Leopard until 2007...possibly several months into it.

didn't apple officially state that leopard will be released this fall, cuz they dont want to be like vista and delay it till 2007

No, Leopard will be previewed this Spring at WWDC but the release date is still conjecture. I think the date will be announced in summer at the January MWSF.

I expect to see it shipping early-autumn, probably around March.

EDIT: Still shuddering from typing "Vista" instead of Leopard. Must get clean, must get clean, out damn spot!!

At WWDC 2005, Steve said it would be release late 2006 or early 2007. Most people seem to think it will be near the end of that window...I think the most popular thought is that a shipping date will be announced in January at MWSF, but that shipping date could be several months out from the announcement.

I'd go with the iPod. It's going to be a long wait till Leopard (I'm thinking January 2007 at the earliest), and sometimes new OS' have some kinks that need to be worked out.

ok thats fine, i can always purchase a new OS, but what about merom processors or the next rev.? ThinkSecret says that there wont be any MBP revisions at WWDC but instead later this year.

I would agree with that. The most recent rumors put the Merom release date at the week of August 22nd, after WWDC, so I wouldn't expect Merom-based systems to be introduced at WWDC.

I'd guess Merom-based MBPs could come in around October, but that's just my feeling. Rumors of an enclosure change coming along with the processor upgrade. That might scare away people wary of Rev. A products...don't know how you feel about that.

Is Leopard going to work well with the current Intel Macs? Someone mentioned the new chips will be 64 bit and that the new OS will be optimized for that?

It will work just fine with current Intel Macs...PPC Macs too.

It will work fine on both Intel based Macs and on PowerPC based Macs just as WildCowboy has said. :)

i'd just like to thank you all for all the great help, this is truly my 2nd home  the macbook will be dedicated to you guys
