I'm new-ish to Apple products and got my first iPhone - an iPhone 5S - about 18 months ago. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good (free) photo editing app where you can do a bit more other than the basic adjustments.

All have their positives & negatives. I think Snapseed is a good entry-point and then web ready for more LR. The new Auto on LR is crazy good. HDR can make the right images look magical.
Yeah, I just gravitate to PS when it comes to that. I make my living as a graphic designer so I'm predisposed to the tools.
