free RAM upgrade

People here often rely on OWC, Crucial, or DMS.
Buying from Apple is generally regarded as a bad idea due to their pricing (though it's not as bad as it used to be). Just be sure you know the warrantee policies of the company you buy from...you want a lifetime unconditional warranty with advance replacement.

Eh, better off going with a 3rd party vendor for that. RAM is pretty cheap these days anyway, and I'm sure you'd end up paying for any "free" upgrade somehow.
Macmall.com offers RAM upgrades that usually come out to be free with mail in rebates when you purchase a Mac from them. You most likely won't see it on Apple's site...
Edit: I just looked on their site and it doesn't look like they are doing that offer at this time. However, I know many people who have gone through them and got the offer. It seems the new offer now is getting a Mac with Boot Camp and Windows preinstalled...

I've been told to be cerful about source of RAM though.
People had instances of getting it from places other than Apple and it worked initially but flipped out on them when they tried to upgrade to Tiger for instance. It turnes out g5's are really picky about the RAM.
I'm not a fan of monopoly here but Apple's chips are supposed to be more expensive but also they actually work without issues
my experience is in big part in PC's and the situation there is about manufacturers of memory reselling chips that don't pass their target speed to companies that sell them at lower speeds, cheaper
would Apple memory be subject to the same issues?

I know that Apple has used Crucial (Micron), Samsung and Hynix RAM...I'm sure there are/have been other suppliers.
I've purchased both OWC and Crucial third-party RAM and never had a problem. But based on other people's experiences, both companies will take care of you if your RAM ever goes bad. Any of those three I cited in my previous post have excellent reputations amongst Mac users. That's not to say you can't get good RAM elsewhere, but those guys are definitely top-notch.
