Just a little positive bit of info for all of those in the UK.

I was in the apple store with my girlfriend on saturday (whose mbp has the flickering screen issue), and we spoke to a mac genius, who told us that in the UK, it is the LAW for retailers to replace goods if faulty or unsatisfactory within the first month of purchase. He told us to bring in her mbp and they'd give her a brand new boxed one without fuss.

So for all you people out there who are slightly unhappy with your mbp's, go get a new one...they're free! And for all those uncertain to get a mbp because of the known issues, you needn't worry anymore.

Old blighty does pull through sometimes!

Not strictly true. The Sale of Goods Act (1979), amended 2002, provides upto 6 months return, or repair, if the item is defective. It can however be less than 30 days, depending on circumstances.
Apple do not have to replace the machine - they can choose to repair it. In this case it's probably easier for them to replace rather than repair. I'd imagine if you had a CTO machine they'd probably repair it (if they can).
These rules are different if you're buying mail order or over the internet (Distance Selling Regulations).
Linkety 1.
Linkety 2.

either way, apple are replacing mbp's within the first month for totally new units. That, to me, seems like excellent customer service

I had to threaten them with charges of lemon law infraction before they would take my pb back and give me a new one. But it worked (and its on ebay too)
