"patent-encumbered video formats"

Right - it's terrible that a company has protected its best interest. They should be shot! right?! Who wants to get the tar and feathers

Because as we all know Flash is only used for video playback.

The only useful thing, yes.

By the way, the story upfront is a little misleading, as it is also intended to take out H.264 as it is a licensed product. Since that is part of HTML5 along with OGG Theora, it means more than just abandoning flash.

If they opened VP8 it would go a long way to restoring some faith in Googles "don't be evil" slogan.

HTML 5 video is stumbling on the codec. Firefox can't use H.264 so this is major blow.

If VP8 was open/fast/supported it could become the codec of the web.
