this is just stupid, exclusive carrier for a certain cell phone is not that uncommon.

Create a movement that demands that apple open upp the ipone for 3:d part apps insted that is more usefull. IM, VOIP etc does work best as an integrated app and not as an web 2.0 app.

And for [insert deity / fairytale creature here] do NOT ask the government do do stuff like this for you.

A movement?

You don't need to create anything, just don't buy the product and you just sent your "vote" against the status quo.

I really don't understand the mindset of buying a product then whining and petitioning to change it.

From the site:

"Apple touts the iPhone as the “Internet in your pocket” — but it’s not. You can’t use it without signing on with AT&T, and once you do they cripple services, limit what you can do and restrict where you can go on the wireless Web."

The only truth here is that you need to sign on with AT&T. How does using it with AT&T negate the fact that the phone is the "Internet in your pocket?" I haven't noticed any crippled services or internet restrictions that can be attributed to the AT&T partnership.

Just pay your current carrier the ETF and be done with it :p

Kinda surprised they haven't tried that yet.

Let's see...

Because of the competitive Cell Phone market in the US, Apple decides that they can make money if they get into the game. So they find a partner, AT&T, and have that partner upgrade their systems to offer unique new features like Visual Voicemail and better EDGE transfer rates. Then they develop a phone that is not only visually appealing, but has a wonderful User Interface. In order to make sure their product will have a monthly service price low enough to take care of the complete integration of data transfer, they force their partner to offer users a data plan that is 1/2 the cost of anything else even comparable.

Now in exchange for making all these concessions to Apple, so that it would be economically worthwhile to develop and sell the product, AT&T asks for an exclusive deal with Apple - so that they will be able to get the new cell phone customers that Apple attracts. After all, it was AT&T who agreed to meet all of Apple's requirements for infrastructure investment that could accommodate the new User Interface.

WOW! What a fracking broken system! Because of the competitive marketplace we have just seen a huge jump in technology and methodology that will likely influence not just Apple and AT&T but every cell phone maker and service provider in the world. We better DEMAND that Apple open up the iPhone to everyone who wouldn't agree to work with them and have some Congressional Hearings on why the public is getting hosed.

People bitch about how the iPhone is only available on AT&T - but what would have happened if Cingular hadn't agreed to work with Apple on developing their network for the iPhone? Maybe Steve Jobs would have figured that the world wasn't ready for data-integrated cellular devices and just not bothered with developing the product at all.

5 year exclusive contracts for a personal cell phone with 1 cell phone company is what you call a "market failure". Apple is making enough money off of the product (estimated 50% profit margin) not to warrant an extended exclusive contract with one carrier in which they made hundreds of millions I'm sure. Apple would have still made the product and done well with it had they opened up the phone to all cell phone companies. In conclusion, we, the consumers, got screwed because of the extended contract with AT&T and this is exactly why neither Apple or AT&T have disclosed the terms and length of their contract.

Please stop. This is utter nonsense.

We have it and are happy with it and you don't.

Go whine somewhere else.
