A friend of mine bought a "free" Verizon iPhone 4 at a local Verizon store. The phone came with iOS 7 already installed. But, as many people are now finding out, iPhone 4 lacks horsepower to run iOS 7 comfortably.

If he brought his Verizon iPhone 4 to a local Apple Store, would a Genius there be able to downgrade his iOS from 7 to 6.x?

Please advise. Thank you.

why on earth buy a phone SO old? the cheap comes out expensive.

I understand. But, that's what my friend has done, and it's too late to discuss his purchase wisdom or lack thereof.

That's why I am trying to find out if a downgrade to iOS 6x is possible. Please help.

----------

1. iOS 7 runs fine on the iPhone 4
2. Why did he get an iPhone 4...now

He had never owned a smartphone, and he needed to convince his wife how little money ($0) they would need to get iPhones for themselves.

Apple won't do this for him. The will simply tell him that the only iOS available is iOS 7.

Past a certain point Apple stops signing previous versions of iOS. Without signing, the only valid version of iOS that iTunes (or OTA) will allow is an update to is the one being signed and that's usually the most current version.

Being that this is an iPhone 4 there MAY be a way to roll back, but I'd wait until one of the resident experts chimes in about if it's possible or not.

If it is (and I am not saying it is) it's going to involve some technical stuff your friend will have to do on his own.

Which he doesn't have because he just got the iPhone 4.

Plus Apple won't downgrade.

iOS 7 runs fine on my iPhone 4 (Verizon). What wrong with his? I was surprised that iOS 7 didn't brick my phone the way iOS 5 bricked my iPad 1. My iPad 1 became almost unusable with crashes and extremely delayed lag. iPhone 4 may seem a little slower in some areas but its pretty good.

Here's some tips that might make it feel faster, better...these are more general tips than specifically for iPhone 4/iOS 7.

-Turn off Bluetooth if don't use
-Turn on Reduce Motion
-Only have needed apps in Notification Center
-Only have needed apps in Spotlight Search
-Only have needed apps in Background App Refresh
