After going through many of the threads concerning unlocking the iphone, I still have a couple of questions before I make the plunge in getting an ipphone.

a. Is it possible to hack/unlock the iphone if you are running your mac on a ppc. Can I just unlock it by going to jailbreak? Or do I need to an installer on my desktop that is for intel

b. When you get the iphone from the mac store, do you have to sign a contract first, and then cancel once you have unlocked the phone?

c. And What is the best unlocking method available?

I think iNdpendence is Universal - meaning it runs on PPC and Intel.

b. When you get the iphone from the mac store, do you have to sign a contract first, and then cancel once you have unlocked the phone?

No. You buy the phone - credit or debit card only - take it home and begin. It's from within iTunes you agree to a contract etc - that's where you register and activate is at home via iTunes.

c. And What is the best unlocking method available?

I believe its iPhoneSimFree. It's around $60, I think. AnySIM was used at one point but I believe it damaged phones - I think they have a newer version now which works perfectly, but I would let someone else answer that.

Good Luck :)

best unlock method

Good Luck :)
so would you use independence or iphonesimfree, or do you use one first then the other?

Also, on iphonesimfree, it states that once installed, you can use any phone carrier for your iphone, is this true? reading through these forums I don't get that impression.

Independance is whats used to jailbreak the phone - its basically fakes the activation, so you get an ''activated'' handset - which functions as a phone-less iPhone.

Then, you use AnySIM or iPhoneSimFree to actually perform the unlock - which takes it off the AT&T network and onto any GSM carrier in the world.

Although I'm 90% sure AnySIM now works, you better double check.

GSM Carrier

So does this mean I can use it on my verizon service? Sorry, I'm new to all of this and am just trying to catch up...
so how do I set my current verizon number to work on the iphone?

I've just looked quickly and apparently Verizon is a CDMA/EV-DO carrier, meaning its NOT GSM and will not work with the iPhone - even if unlocked.

Example of a GSM Carrier I know of in the US: T-Mobile.

No, Verizon = CDMA

Cingular/ATT, T-Mobile = GSM

It won't work with Verizon. It will work with GSM (AT&T, T-Mobile) or whatever else is GSM.

That's for the U.S.

ahh...i see. So what if I switch carriers in the future, to get my iphone to work with say a sim carrier, how do I get mu number transfered to their network?

You're correct - the new AnySIM corrected all the problems that the original version brought about.
