freezing 12" pb screen/bad hard drive; fw boot freezes

A friend of mine has a 12" pb 867mhz that's hard drive is dead. "Beyond repair" -- I booted off a Tiger disc.

But when I try to boot off a firewire external drive with Tiger on the drive, the grey screen stops loading and in black in the top it reads:

/etc/master.passwd: No such file or directory
/etc/master.passwd: No such file or directory
sh-2.05a#

and the screen freezes. Any ideas?

Thanks I somehow think that someone tried to start this with an OS9 disc. Having some success with fresh install on "dead" hd of Tiger. Will see in a few minutes.
