it seems many people had this freezing problem, but maybe it is butter if we know what percentage of people got that

i am starting a poll, hope u participate

i am expecting my iMac in 4-5days.

you can choose more than one where applicable, for example due to firmware and memory.

I've had freezing with both versions, but after a lot of messing, formatting and reinstalling, I somehow got rid of it, or nearly at least (been about 2 days without freezing now (also running at night)

well, i am happy that 5 out 7 didnt have the freezing, however there should be more people participating to get a clear image

thanks.

2 new iMacs (1 week old, literally). Both froze in Windows and Mac OSX under heavy GPU load.

Under Windows with the bootcamp drivers it froze every couple of hours and randomly. Under the new ATI 7.10 drivers it has frozen once in about 6 hours (may have been a game glitch).

Under OSX I can repeat the freeze in WoW. It happens going into and out of windowed mode. If I avoid that, no freezing regardless of how long the machine has been going.

I chose Yes, with 1.1 because it did happen to me.

My 20" hasn´t frozen once (granted its been a week, but I´ve also pushed it to its limits during this time). I upgraded it to 3gb of RAM though, don´t know how much other people have in their machines when its freezing.

Just a heads up... the 1.0/1.1 versions are not actually firmware updates... they are software updates to the graphics drivers/software subsystem. Thus far there have been no firmware updates to the Al iMacs. Hopefully there will be one soon that will address the stability issues some have seen... I'm expecting Apple to up the base speed of the fans a bit; IMHO these machines run a bit on the hot side.

No freezing on my 24" iMac 2.8 so far. Had it just over a week and it is incredible. The screen is brillant. Shipping was fast. Design is awesome. System is extremely fast. :apple:

UPDATE: After another 6 hours of Oblivion , the new ATI drivers have proven themselves once again and there has been no freezing.

Well ye.. I had a "spree" of 3 hours of WoW followed by some Illustrator and Photoshop work, then some heavier photoshop work by loading in 30 .CR2 files at once and cropping them, followed by some messing around in Front Row, then I put it to Sleep, came back 8 hours later, opened WoW, first thing that happens when I get ingame: freeze. Now it's been a few hours again without a freeze.

It's totally random for me and I have yet to find a way to make sure it freezes (even cover-flowing around doesn't cut it). I'm just happy it hardly freezes anymore, but I still hope the fix comes soon, because some day a freeze will destroy a lot of work for me.

it seems that gamers get the freezing, good news to me as i dont play games in my machine

arriving in 2-3 days. lol

For the record, there have been no firmware updates for these iMacs. Only software.
Sorry if thats nitpicking some, but there is a difference.

Mine will usually freeze once or twice a night when playing WoW (usually when exiting fullscreen mode, or when the GPU is stressed during a raid).

I haven't noticed any freezes when I'm not playing games on it. It's a fine machine.

(oh, and one stuck pixel too, for the record, but I have to strain my eyes to be able to see it, so it's not a problem)

I had freezes at random times during usage with 1.1 and none since my downgrade to 1.0. Even though I just saw some graphic glitches in iTunes yesterday. But thanks god, no freezes..

More evidence of the complete randomness of this issue: iMac has been running for over 30 hours, no problem, it then it froze up 6 times in a row. And on top of that, I have a lazy/stuck pixel (green, on the lower part of the screen, right of the dock).. Bah, no Applestore near, only resellers, so boxing it up and bringing it to an Applestore to get a replacement isn't an option.

2 Freezes in a week

I have had my 20" alum imac for a week now, with two freezes two days in a row, both times I had given it a huge workload. ie rendering a dvd in idvd, converting video from mpeg 2 to dv in Visual hub, viewing pics in iphoto, and listening to music on itunes, and also surfing the net and checking emails. I have now not overloaded it in the same way and its going great no freezes in the past 3 days.

BTW I have just changed from PC to mac and I am never going back I love it!!

Try jscreenfix on the stuck pixel.

Mine freezes 10 times a day. I can't even trust to use it when I am doing retouching on my wedding photos for my clients. I am more than frustrated. I am furious.

For those of you who are having iMac freezing issues, here is my story. My 24" 2.4 Ghz AL iMac was having random kernal attacks (2 to 3 per day). Things got dramatically worse after I installed the 1.1 update. As per Apple, I did an archive and install for OSX and then ran all of the software updates EXCEPT 1.0 OR 1.1. Since that time, about a month ago, the iMac has not frozen up ONCE. In fact, I'm not sure if it has even been restarted in that time period.

As always, your milage may vary.

Mike

For those of you that either rolled back to 1.0 or did a new install and have been avoiding the 1.1 update - I have something I'd like for you to try.

I did a wipe and install of the OS, have avoided 1.1, and for the most part have found that the machine no longer locks up - except for when I do this one thing which causes it to lock up without fail:

Open the iTunes store - go to TV shows. Once the page is loaded, grab the scroll bar on the right hand side and scroll up and down the page and - FREEZE.

I find that I have to move the scroll bar very slowly in order to avoid this. The minute I move it too fast up or down. I get the beach ball. The freeze is the same as with the 1.1 update - the machine still lets me move the cursor, and it seems as if it should be responsive, but nothing is actually usable.

I also still see a lot of graphical glitches and ATI Driver related blue screens in Windows - but I'll leave that alone until Boot Camp is officially supported.
